Goodyear Vs Conti Vs Michelin

hi. after a spell of motorway driving (b200 cdi sport 2012 w246) I've decided to replace the runflats with a normal tyres. I'm guessing its not just the tyres, i.e. the suspension has some part to play, but I hoping to help improve the ride.

I need some advice, as its around a 400quid investment. I've done a hour or so on google and I reckon one of these tyres is to be getting:-


Goodyear efficientgrip
Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Continental ContiSportContact 5

(225/40/18)

they all appear around the same price, just hoping to get some advice/feedback from your experiences on which is the better tyre. cheers
 
I thought you had to change the rims as well but obviously not if you can do it all for a £400 pound investment.
 
'Best' is a subjective thing most of the time and those three tyres are about slightly different things IMO. All of them should improve the ride over run flats, the Goodyear is biased slightly more towards comfort/noise and rolling resistance without compromising elsewhere too much i.e. turn in and dry grip aren't gonna be in the same league as something like the Super Sport which is closer to a full on road legal track day tyre. The Conti is kinda middle ground of the three, it's a road/'sport' touring tyre like the Goodyear but a biased a bit more towards performance than comfort/economy

On a m/way in heavy rain with standing water i'd MUCH rather be in a car with the Goodyears or Contis. On a dry road i'd still rather have either of those if the car is a Bclass 200cdi or something like my big wafty barge of an s124. A quick/chuckable track day toy on the other hand and i'd want something stickier with sharper handling like the super sports

FWIW i swapped from Conti sport contact 3 to Goodyear Eagle assymetric 2 (225/45r17) last year and think the Goodyears are soooooo much nicer... quiter and more comfortable ride without being squidgy and vague. Yours being a different size might account for it but the Goodyears were significantly cheaper than sport contact 3 or 5

Goodyears for me out of those three in all conditions, although I'd have compared Goodyears F1 with those.

Don't over look Dunlops RT through..:thumb:

+1 Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics are excellent in the wet!
 
+1 on Eagle F1's
I currently have Michelin Pilot Super Sports (Not track day road legal Hotrodder, that's the Michelin Pilot sport Cup tyres)
Michelin are pretty good all-round tyre with excellent dry grip and ok wet.
For me, the Eagle F1's will be going back on shortly ;)
 
You won't go wrong with any of those. I'd personally edge towards the Continentals or Michelin of the three you listed, but that's simply personally preference.
 
I've found Michelin to not wear too well, good grip and low sound level though.

My personal preference is Continental though; grippy, quiet and last well.
 
Just recently put 17" Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics on the S204 and love them. Quiet, grippy, comfortable ride - even SWMBO was impressed both as passenger and driver!
 
As you will be able to deduce from the foregoing Posts there is not a definitive answer.......it probably does not matter in the slightest.

FWIW the summer tyres on my SL (I realise the characteristics will be different from a B class) are coming towards the end of their life but will see this, their third, summer season out.

They are Conti SC5s on 17" wheels and they offer good tyre suspension and excellent grip with relatively supple side walls.......they are noisy tyres and as with all tyres they get noisier towards the end of their legal life.

I do not have staggered wheels which allows me (I am an old fashioned boy) to rotate the wheels (this means that I would not entertain asymmetric tyres).

I have found that by rotating the tyres (wheels) I get more than 25% additional wear from a set of four tyres (19.5k to a probable 26.0k).......this is not definitive because there are a lot of possible variables, not least of which is that previous sets of summer tyres were not Conti SC5s.......they have only been available for about three years.

Good comments above. I've got the Goodyear Efficient grips on my cls and am really pleased with them so far. My driving is mainly motorway and fast a roads and I tend towards cruise rather than sport! :)
 
I've had Goodyear Asymmetric 2s on all my cars except the CL which I put ContiSportContact 5Ps on (the Goodyears weren't available with the right load rating). My verdict is that the Goodyears are a bit more compliant and quiet but have a slightly muddier turn-in. I've just replaced the rears on the CL which lasted about 10k (par for the course, I suppose, for an AMG...) and the fronts still have a couple of mm on them.

Why not asymmetric tyres?

They are not directional.. (rotation)
They have an inner and outer sidewall and can be rotated about the car
Outer sidewall is always outer sidewall:confused:

Apologies to asymmetric tyres......terminology brain fade on my part......directional tyres are the no no.
