I can't afford Comand or Installed Sat Nav at the moment but yesterday I got a Magellan Sportrek Map Portable GPS. I also got the Mapsend Street for the whole of Europe which is amazing software.

The unit is about the size of my mobile phone and is accurate to 3 metres. I can display speed accurate to 0.1mph in real time, Digital odometre, Altitude, which is interesting I live quite near the River Medway but my house is 348ft above sea level. It plots heading, bearing and you can either follow the map, or a road, a compass, or bearings or a route line.

It fits my phone holder on the dashboard but I might get a windscreen suction type holder.

Very pleased with it. One downside is the speedo only goes up to 951mph!

Edit: this picture is bigger than the real thing!

Very nice  . I've casually looked for the last couple of years for one for mountain biking. We regularly get lost in the wilds of Scotland and every time we do, we say "Must get a GPS!". The Garmin ones are usually favourite, but I do like the look of that.

When you say "the size of your mobile phone", do you have a current model or is your c1995 model still going strong? ;)

Fair comment. OK a bit bigger than a Nokia 3330! Retail for one of these plus Street mapping rather than a basemap and the Data cable is circa £350 but theres one on ebay with mapping that ends in 4 hours time and is currently at £117......

Found it ... still at £117 ... will keep an eye on it for the next 2ish hours.

Iused a magellan "Neverlost " GPS system as used by HErtz in USA.

It was generally ok but some of the directions were a bit ambiguous. one thing that made us laugh was the comand "slight left turn" it was a hairpin bend on a freeway exit ramp!

I didnt think it was as good as BEcker or Comand /APS car units. but better than messing about with maps in an unfamiliar area .

Talking of dodgy directions, whenever I take the M6 toll road, my garmin GPS starts telling me to make a U turn....

On my way to Brid this morning my TomTom directed me into a pub car park and then instructed me to drive through the bar. Must know me too well :D

mine tried to take me through an army base the other day  complete with barbed wire, armed guards etc etc...

merc coupe making a u turn must have looked dodgy...
