Hi,

Suddenly my car (CLA 15reg 32k miles on clock) started to shake on motorway speed. From 60 mph to 85mph it shakes quite scary and I would say peak of shaking festival taking place around from 68 - 78 mph.

My questions are:

1) If official dealer said alignment was done 15k miles and its true - I would minimise issue with aligment straight away.
2) I caught quite bad pot hole week ago - can that made effect to that and if yes why shaking turned up suddenly considering each single day I`m driving on motorways and would notice that. Shaking appeared three days after pothole.
3) I contacted Merc dealers: suspension check: £120 + Wheel alignment: £170.
4) Is it worth to pop down to local garage and ask them to rebalance tyres before I`m going to official dealer and spend £40 on alignment with them?
5) I popped down to "National Tyres" today and they said they are UNABLE to do wheel alignment to my car because they can`t adjust rear wheels...meh and there is no point to do only front ones...so I just waved and went away not going in to details (waste of time).
6) I did checked tyres and thread is not even, so defo it`s not ideal, but there isn`t chunks of rubber ripped off so I suppose it`s not critical... again I`m going back to point 1, cos there shouldn't be any "asphalt tyre eating festival" if alignment were done 15k miles ago... double meh

I have continental tyres and car been checked on annual service two weeks ago providing video report - no advisories. Also I checked car by myself and couldn`t spot nothing suspicios regarding "actually observed - that doesn't seems ok" judgement.

Guys please lay out your opinion just in case If missed something beeing far away from expert and what would be the best sequence to get this sorted...and if you have somebody who you trust around 17th exit on M25 (Maple Cross, Rickmansworth) to who I can pop down with short notice that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks for you time and help.

Check the simple things, get all 4 wheels checked for balance and any out of round tyres (possibly wheels) after hitting the pothole you may have a damaged tyre that may only be visible on a ramp with the tyre free to rotate.

If you have uneven wear on your tyres then you need a wheel alignment, it is perfectly possible to adjust the front independent of the rears.

As for who to go to, you have some well respected experts near to you here :Wheel Alignment Experts Chesham | Car Tyres Fitting and Wheel Alignment Specialists

Hi, thanks for advise.

By the way I forgot to mention, Ive done puncher on rear tyre and thought they done something wrong when was balancing out tyre, so National Tyres was able at least to balance out both back wheels, so that`s been sorted.

I will try to find time tom to pop down to suggested places.

Thanks

Almost certainly down to the pothole incident. The fact the problem wasn't apparent right away may be due to the fact something was damaged/weakened by the impact and has got worse since. Could be several things damaged wheel /tyre / loss of balance weights [ they may be inside the wheel so you wouldn't see their absence ] is the obvious one but damaged / bent suspension component, weakened bushes ,trackrod ends, broken spring , damaged/bent shock/strut etc etc. Get the car onto a hard level surface- does it sit level? check the gap between the top of the tyre and the wheelarch is it the same side to side, with the help of some friends rock the car on its suspension- any weird noises? After that you need to get the car to a specialist to give it a good check over up on a ramp as already advised.

Much appreciated your advise, thanks. I will actually go to suggested place tomorrow first thing in the morning.

I would ring beforehand if you want the full wheel alignment at Wheels in Motion. They can be busy and it takes a long time.

Thanks for advise. I was thinking to call and book in advance, but as they are locatel locally I might better jump in to arrange appointment in person, not insisting to get serviced ahead of bookies. Also I can spend some waiting time if possible on local waters as angler. Thanks

Jack it up, make a simple pointing arm, and spin wheel, look to see if there is any buckle on the wheel, look to see if there is any flat spot on the rim.
Do the same for the inner edge of the rim, as it can be more prone to damage, being further from the ‘stronger’ part supported by the spokes.
Check all your rims.

Thanks mate, will try to do it tomorrow in the morning. I hope my judgement will be fair enough to be prepared that I can address what I will spot before garage appontment, heard that people can be fooled due to luck of understanding, so your advice is in right place. Thanks

Has a weight cone off the inside of an alloy, which is now unbalancing it? Unless you’ve bent the alloy going through a lot hole, that’s the most likely cause if it’s a sudden change

I went over the weekend to local garage who has laser wheel alignment stand.

Paid in total: £79 inc vat. They done wheel alignment and four wheel balancing, proudly announcing: vibration and shaking gone, just need two new front tyres in moth or two time...

Thanks to all of you for advices!

That's good news. Was going to suggest similar things to the guys before me but it sounds like it's all sorted. Good for you. :)

Good to hear.

It's also a good idea to treat the car to full geometry alignment every year or two...
