W211 shocking front tyre wear

I think a lot of new tyres are less than 8mm these days. Depends on the manufacturer/model but some Michelins are closer to 6-7mm new I understand.

Is that "shrinkflation"?

I don’t think so. Tyre performance changes from new to barely legal. Possibly a sweeter spot for driving at 6-7mm than say 8-9mm?

Otherwise we would see new tyres with 10-20mm tread depth or something!

Perhaps lower noise and reduced rolling resistance with slightly reduced tread depth - perhaps with a longer lasting compound for best all round performance?
