Dear all

I need you help

I have recently passed my driving test. While preparing for the test, I was tought that if I need to stop for more that 30 secs (approximately), it is advised to apply hand brake.

Now... I was driving today with my husband (whose patience is not good enough to teach others to do anything). So he told me that I should not use hand brake while driving the car with an automatic gear box  unless parking on the hill. When I tried to explained what I was told by the instructor, I was told off and had to shut my mouth.:(

Therefore, I hope you will help me to understand whether I was wrong or I was shouted at with no reason

Thanks in advance

   He needs a good slap!!!! You should never shout at a new/learner driver. You should never shout at anyone unless it's to get them out of danger.

If you are on the flat you don't have to use the handbrake although yes you should, and in an auto put it in neutral.

Oh and eta - welcome btw - we won't shout at you ;) unless you do something really stoopid - but that's usually just the blokes - funny that innit ;)

I'm the last one to ask as I never use my handbrake on an automatic........something I learnt in USA where it gets mighty cold in winter.

sorry
I just wanted him (husband) to see this tread...

No need to be sorry.

I woud actually like PJH to respond as he is a driving instructor so can tell you and your OH what you should do. However, what experienced drivers do is often different - but it doesn't make them right and you wrong!

Very rude of me not to welcome you to the forum, so welcome ena :):) I know that we are supposed to, but in reality we dont, I have had autos since the early 60's and have not used the parking brake once while waiting at lights atc

So there is nothing wrong in applying hand brake... Esp if I got use to do it while learning to drive.

Hey, Enas, come and read this topic!!! :D :D :D

Hello, good evening and welcome:)

You should really use the handbrake in a manual, and handbrake or park in an auto. Helps if some pillock runs into the back of you, particularly if you are waiting to pull out into traffic......

Your husband is, imho, speaking out of his fundament!

You have to pass the test by doing things in the correct manner, what ever the instructors says goes, good luck and tell your man to shut up.

When you have passed the test you will find it easier just to sit with a foot on the brake.
