I couldn't help but notice the contrast between what happened to the van driver and what happened to the guy who took a cricket bat to someone whp was threatening to kill his family.

One got 2 years, one got 3.5, guess which way round...

That would be because he was only *threatening* to kill his family.

You have to wait until they kill one before you're allowed to react.

Don't think it really highlights the dangers of drink especially especially, seems to be highlighting the dangers of generally not paying attention and not being aware of your surroundings.

I wonder if this accident would have still happened if the van driver didn't drink anything?

Had he not got into his van after consuming nearly double the legal limit, we would not have to consider an answer to the question.

But I do agree with your comment on generally not paying attention and not being aware of your surroundings.
