normal. if you press the brake pedel and then start the car the pedel will go soft as the servo starts to work, in the old days all pedels were that hard all the while ( showing my age)
Depends on what you call a short period of time? and if you are sure it wasnt do it before, the car is telling you have a potential problem to address.
Just locate the brake servo and follow the fat plastic pipe until it leads you to the inlet manifold, iirc they used to have a non return valve fitted not sure if thats still the case.
as lynall says, if the pedal goes hard within, say, 2 miutes you may have a problem. and yes, there is a non return valve, this or the servo itself would be chief suspects.

Did you sort this problem, I have the samo on my c230, this is not as it should be, fairly sure the servo is at fault on mine as i have checked the non return valve and servo with a vacuum pump.

yes, the servo still functions, but it should hold vacuum even over night, worst thing is it could fail completely at the worst possible moment and it is also intruducing excess air (un metered) into the engine, not an issue at the moment but could get worse.
