Just bought a U581 reader scanner from Amazon, just over £70 incl vat and postage. Reads and clears all engine faults and removes warning lights. I think only Star will read and clear non engine faults. Looked to buy from ebay as same unit £10 cheaper but less hassle with amazon if faults occur within 12 months.

Thats the same lead i use with my u581 does my w210 with 38 pin socket and wifes w203 with obd socket.

i have a maxscan gs 500, used it on loads of car without any problems.

Yep worked okay pretty cheap quality but fits and works both mine and wifes cars are 2001 but if it works on mine with the old plug i would guess it would work on most merc with the same plug set up.
I suppose for £10 what have you got to lose?

A friend of mine bought this for his bosch system and didn't work

To be honest i havent had any codes on the wifes merc but i have read the lambda sensor outputs etc etc.

On mine only code i had was when i left the maf unplugged after i refitted the injectors, refitted on way to work and code cleared off next day with u581.

Was reading another post either on here or mb owners site and a poster said would not work on his and he had to swap a wire over on the adaptor lead.

Will take some pics later of u581 plugged in.

Far as i know only reads and clears engine associated faults/codes. Think you will need Star to read and clear other faults/codes.
