Heater - not very hot

I have a c220cdi 2008 auto done 80k, the heater does not warm up that fast. Is this normal???

My old astra used to be like an oven after a few mins with heater on!

I've been reading a few posts about thermostats causing low mpg. I suffer from low mpg in my car and am now suspecting the low heater output could be linked to an ageing thermostat also, note: the car does steam up quickly in cold weather. Also it does take a while for the gauge to get up to temp

Anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences?

How much am I looking at for parts and labour at an independent?

Thanks in advance

Was your Astra also a diesel or was it petrol? Diesels are more thermally efficient so do take a little loger to get to temperature hence the question.

How many miles roughly does it take to get up to normal running temperature and what temperature does it indicate? (just trying to figure whether your thermostat is working correctly).

Astra actually a diesel 1.3cdti! But heater was amazing!

Temp i would say is generally between 78-82 degrees.

I will check on my next trip to see how many miles it takes to reach top temp.

Cheers

It should be running at 80º - 90º and reach the lower 80º within a few miles.

New Merc thermostats are usually about £40 and come complete with a new housing. No alternative. Don't know about labour costs as I changed mine myself.

Cheers for the response..

I mentioned in another post, a 9 mile journey stop start in traffic only got temp up to 60-65 degrees. I think a few more miles would have hot it up to temp. But overall seems a bit slow.

Hi, takes a few miles in this weather to warm up these diesels, mine runs when up to temperature at 85-90 degrees (new stat 12 months ago) but l would say about 10 miles to reach full temperature. So would check your temperature after a fair run before changing stat. Hope this helps

Thanks appreciate the advice. Will give it a few runs to see if it reaches temp each time after about 10 miles or so. Cheers

9 miles in stop start traffic and still only 60-65 degrees, I would change it.
