Hello and Help for an OldGirl (the car not me!) - Ignition not turning

Latest update... W124 on the way, garage have agreed to try to replace it so I can get her on the road again. Waiting for new tumbler to arrive before trying spare key so if we can turn to position one we can hopefully get the old barrel out and the new one in. Fingers crossed

This is not a massive problem. It is entirely possible to replace the whole steering column with one from a scrapper and there are plenty around. At the worst, you may need to use a different key to start the car. If the lock can be turned, the fix takes minutes. If not, a couple of hours.

From the YouTube clips I've seen that cover this particular model the ignition switch is mounted on the dash panel and not on the steering column, I'll stand to be corrected.

No, you are quite right, as I should have remembered. The switch pulls on a cable to release the steering lock. It isn't hard to fix.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH . I got my Old Girl back today with the replacement barrel you suggested from ebay. It's been a long saga and without your kind help and advice I would have her back. Plus I made a mistake earlier, she only has 146,000 on the clock. Again, a huge thank you to you all xoxo

Saved by the MBClub which is even more appropriate as my Daddy's initials were MB... I hope he is smiling down seeing the Old Girl in her rightful place

This is fantastic news that a classic has been saved.

Here’s hoping that you enjoy many more happy years of motoring...

Good news. I would be careful which mechanic you use in future though. If you took his original advise the car would be long gone to the scrap yard.

Absolutely...

Glad you rescued your car :)
