I have a 05 C 220 CDI which I have just brought - 63k on the clock but a few annoying issues!!

Issue 1 - annoying whistling noise coming from the central air vents when the Air Con is on Auto or the Fan speed is above 3.

Any idea what this issue might be (I have tried the Air Con Vent Reset - did not work). I have read that it might be a leak in the system, but don’t know where to start in terms of looking for this..

Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks :-)

Vent not fully closed?

Do you hear a 'clicking' noise for a few seconds when you first start up?

Vent is fully open (I think..) - I will check...

No Click noise on start up either. however I did do a reset of the vents and heard the clicking then

You can often hear a whistle from vents if they are just a tiny bit open.

A clicking noise on startup suggests that the gears on your stepper motors are stripped.

Could it be a leak somewhere?

The noise will probably be due to low ac gas.

Thanks - It sounds like air is leaking out somewhere (like a boiling kettle whistle). Have you seen this issue before?

Have the a/c checked for leaks & regassed if needed, you can usually get it done cheaper this time of the year;)

Had a similar problem with my C220 coupe, i tried the air con yesterday and noticed it was not cold, then a few minutes later there was a noise from the vent area, like a kettle whistle, but not very loud, i turned the air con off and the sound stopped, the heater was ok btw. so i went to kwik fit and for £29 they regassed it and added lubricant (they dont charge if they cant get it to work)..job done..i think in future i'll have it done every two years or so, as it was two and a half sence it was last done.. i know there is a kit you can buy to do it yourself, but i think it's better to have it done for you...hope this helps

I have noticed the same thing on my wife w203 180 2006, wisling noice and no cold air from the vents.I nether had gas topped up since new , so I thing I will make a visit to kwik fit and see.

It's not uncommon to hear the refrigerant (R134a) running around the system depending on the settings of the system at that time.
This is not a sign of a fault necessarily but your gas charge could be low.
The noise is certainly not gas escaping as it would be empty in less than 60 secs if it were and would then lock out the compressor on the low pressure switch.

You can't accurately tell how much a system has lost by just using gauges as most garages do, they tend to just wack a few hundred gramms in untill the suction pipe feels icy cold much like a Can of Coke straight out of the fridge!

The correct (and legal way) to comply with the F-Gas regulations is to recover the old charge using an approved recovery machine, locate the leak and repair, pressure test using OFN (Oxygen Free Nitrogen) and then weigh in a fresh charge to the manufactures spec. Usually under 1000 grams for most Manuf's
