My horn has stopped working on my W203 C class and its nearly time for my mot any one got any ideas! i tried the fuse box but seems there is nothing there linking to the horn!

Faulty Horn

I'm new to MBs but the problem and fix is universal to all cars.

First of all find the horn, it will be at the front of the car somewhere near the radiator?

Test the wiring to the horn with a meter or a test light. Get a helper to press the horn while you hold the testers wires to the (disconnected) wiring of the horn.

If the meter lamp shows 12+ volts then the problem is the horn itself, replace the horn. It doesn't have to be sourced from MB, any aftermarket horn(s) will fit.

If there is no indication of current at the wires to the horn then the problem is either the horn push, a fuse a broken wire or a poor earth. (if you're having problems now, it's time to visit an auto electrician or a garage).

Good luck

Nothing to do with your problem, but the solution may be the same.

Is it just me or does the horn fitted to the W211 sound pathetic? Not expecting to have cyclists shaken from their saddles nor rattle the brains of idiot pedestrians but there are standards to be upheld.

What I get no doubt conforms to some EU Directives and is fairly loud, but the overall effect is a sort of flat, single tone "Maaaaaaahhhhh" which just might be OK for Noddy and his Little Yellow Car. (Think cheap Casio keyboard when you expected a church organ)

Whilst not in the same class as New York taxi drivers, I have to use the horn a lot more than most. On the road to my house there is a blind crest on a single track canal bridge so at least twice a day I have the opportunity to get depressed by the naff "audible warning device"

So if one wishes to fit more seemly devices (i.e decent dual tone but not air horns) what is suggested?

Mine is pretty loud, so perhaps it needs adjusting or changing.

Mine is quite loud too.

Well, mine is loud also but it sounds really horrible. Maybe I have been spoilt by the horns on my old car, which were very substantial twin electric coiled horn units taken off a Wolsley 16/60 by my Dad many years ago before he scrapped it. (Stupidly I forgot to take them off again when I sold the car on.)

Now they really did the business. Not just loud, but a rich, resonant and tuned to each other. Not so much a "Excuse me look out, here I am" tone, more "OUT OF MY WAY, POND SCUM"

Now that is more like it!

thanks guys the problem has been rectified!! stupid really but quite annoying as from the start i figured it would be a blown fuse and it was that! just the problem was if you look up the fuse sheet it will not say anything about a fuse for the horn so i had to take each fuse out one by one and visually check it but in the end i got the culprit!!
now enough of the horn thing!!!!

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of the "camp horn syndrome"?!! I have the same problem in my W211 - someone said its a dual horn and they only both work over a certain speed? Is this right or should i be replacing it? cheers

I have heard that if your Horn's not working..... Viagra's good
