Can anyone help.
The instrument dashboard cluster (speedo, revs etc.) has just gone blank on my 2000 s class.
The car still works but the dashboard has gone.
Any ideas????
A change of a fuse has got the indicators etc working on the dash but it blows after 1 mile.

Please help.- dont tell me i need a new one!!

While i'm on can anyone tell me where i can get a drivers side wishbone suspension arm. That is going also.

Sounds like the back lighting for the display - and the MB dealer's answer is 'it needs replacing' - I only know this because of the bloke in front of me in the queue collecting his car went white when he was told the same about his S class (some months ago)

Now I have some vague idea that there was a recall on those clusters for exactly that reason, so you should ask the dealer to check

There was a recall issued by NHSTA in USA but I am not sure which countries that applies to. It is also limited to certain VIn numbers and years. Replacing the cluster is the best option. There are a few people that can repair them. If you send it in for repair, DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR WITHOUT THE CLUSTER. Any mileage mismatches are not fixable.

It is most likely the High-Voltage switch supply for the incandescent illumination that is broken. It consists of (amongst other things) two transistors and a high voltage transformer. IF you are handy and know how to solder and use a hot air gun the transistors can be replaced. You will need two special tools to unmount the instrument cluster from the dashboard. The instrument cluster consists of two circuit boards and a couple of display modules. There are a couple of variants but once the high voltage switcher is identified, the transistor types are identifyable without any problem.

Thanks for that. I am just back after being away for the weekend and I tried opening the merc and the dash flickered on and off. the next time i tried it it works fine.
So it sounds like it is the high voltage thingy about to go.
I will try driving tomorrow and see how long it takes for it to go off.

Some company in Gillingham (BBA Reman) say they can do refurbs on the dashes for £175 plus postage back and give 2 year warranty. Sounds better than a new one at £800 ish.
Has anyone heard of them and what do you think??

It definitly sounds better to spend £175 than £800. No need to scrap an instrument cluster just because two clearly identifyable semiconductors have gone bad. BBA Reman has obvously identified the two transistors ;-)

they advertise in mercedes enthusiast, 2 year warranty and 175 quid, against 800.

hmmmm

The dash is being removed this morning and sent off to them today. They quote 4 days but he said it should be faster.
Will let you all know on return

No charge and did a couple of other jobs too. Go to your nearest MB dealer and they will look up the VIN to see if your car qualifies.

There is a recall on these now. Had mine replaced a few weeks ago.

My W220 instrument cluster just died on me:crazy:

Hopefully MB will be nice:rolleyes: Watch this space !

ps

Happy New Year all :)

MB are too busy to speak to me  They must be fixing all those clusters

I checked the fuses 3 x 5 amp nearside box. One had blown, I replaced it and the green indicator lights are flashing again and also the blue main beam. All the initial power on lights are showing now too.
The four orange needles can now be seen but the white backlighting is dead  Looks like the backlight failure blew the fuse which works the indicator green lights etc.

Hopefully they will replace it (if they ever get back to me )
