Came to start my car this morning and it wont. The key will not turn and it will not come out of park with the foot brake applied. Please help

(OT)
 Typical just what I need especially after some **** trashed the wiper on the MINI last night.

Stamp on the footbrake and wiggle the key this is a known fault also wiggle the steering wheel .

if all else fails then it`s a new ignition barrel sorry m8

Ok on dismantling all the cables connection to gear shift and testing the fault does seem to be the ignition barrel.

On consulting the Haynes manual it states a lot of usefull stuff namely turn key to position 1.

I cant turn the key to position 1 and yes the steering lock is on. So is there something simpler than getting the biggest sledge hammer I can find and taking it to the barrell.

This happened on my c220 the car was parked up my drive the steering on full lock they had to break the lock and jack it out of the drive to take it away and fit new lock

Im confused.

Why do you want to take it out of park? To push it?

It will not come out of Park surely until the Ignition is ON. That is your main problem.

Are you sure that a strong waggle of the steering wheel whilst trying to turn the key will not work?? I would keep trying this as it the only hope, other than fitting a new barrel, which should be the very last resort.

This is bad news. If you can't get teh key to 1 then the barrel will need drilling out, or similar.
If you get the key to 1 then remove the barrel as it is going to fail anytime now.

That was information to aid diagnosis. Cant push it anywhere if I wanted to with the steering lock on.

Come on then hit me with the worst what can I expect to pay for a new barrel

Oh well had the AA man out. He got stuck just where I did earlier. So said call round the we will come back out and tow you in.

Look like i will have to accept a big bill. Will be on the phone first thing to the warranty people in the morning but you can bet your life they will get out of it. Then it will be call to Mercedes seeing what they have to say.

Such is life but im still smiling :D

Off to the pub now to sulk over a pint and grab some food.

dont know if it is of any use but a Full lock set for a 124 is £186. You wont be able to get a matching ignition lock off the shelf. They usually come from Germany and take a minimum of 2 days. (mine took 3 months to get the right set) Be prepared to expose all your details to the dealer, from birth certificate to bank details  Best of luck and I agree with others, wiggle the hell out of it.

Try a squirt of WD40 in the barrel,You got nothing to lose.

Gave that one a try (WD40) its had a soak now for 6 pints :D (5 hrs) and still it will not play. Oh the joy of cars.

One question how the hell do people nick Mercs. They need medals and not locking up the skill deserves big money.

Just did that for my spare key only got to use it once so they best be the same lock for the key or I wont be happy. If its only £186 ill be laughing with that but any luck it will be under warranty. Will report tomorrow anyway.

Cheers Guys :D :D :)

Still smiling its the beer that helps

Well car is towed away being stored at one of my hauliers yard until next monday when the garage can fit it in. Taking to a local specialist as Mercedes £90 an hour labour charge certainally proves the stealership reputation.

So i have been told if im lucky £150 if not £250 just have to see how it goes. So no Merc for a week and back to pedal power.

Smiling Again

Happy to report I was back on the road last Friday after being without my car for almost 2 weeks.

Complete new ignition barrel and steering lock assembly came out at £187 fitted + the VAT not bad compared with Mercedes Benz Derbys £90 an hour labour (Is that the going rate?).

Also got an oil service and a new multiway switch for headlight etc all in £394.

Could do without it this time of year. But hey such are the joys of motoring. :bannana: :bannana:
