Was driving my Mercedes E350 diesel earlier and started to hear the engine very noisy and car began to loose power, was driving up a steep hill at the time. Stopped the car and lifted the bonnet. There was ALOT of heat. Checked coolant levels and they were ok, but oil levels just below minimum!!! So red faced I called my husband to get engine oil. I am wondering if I might have done much damage, I didn't drive it for long when I heard the noise but still!! Is it possible that I might have got away with it assuming this is the problem???

Normal coolant level and an oil level just below minimum that hasn't triggered a low pressure warning is unlikely to be the problem.

Check for split or disconnected hoses from the Intercooler. Any problem here will cause loss of power and possibly more noise.

It told me the engine was due a service 45 days ago..is that the same thing?
If the car is fine after a little oil top up and cool down, get it booked in ASAP I would recommend.

As part of a service, the garage will perform a health check and/or see obvious problems, leaks, splits etc

Will do, thanks for the advice!

Interestingly it was with the mechanic Monday. They replaced a high pressure hose which was connected to the power steering. Might it be related to this?
That wouldn't cause a power loss plus there would be fluid leaking and heavy steering.

Yes true, I topped up the oil last night and did the school run this morning and it seems to be driving well. There is still some oil on the driveway. The mechanic assured me that fixing that high pressure hose would have resolved this issue. Maybe what they thought was steering fluid may have been something else! Husband mentioned that there may be some oil left in a 'tray'?

There could be power steering fluid on one of the undertrays.

Something caused the issue yesterday. I would advise getting the codes read, there should be stored codes in the ECU.

I have just got it booked in again for service/health check and they will check the codes etc. Thanks
