HK system needs more thump

C63 estate
Any ideas how to easily add a bit more thump to the HK system in my C63 estate? I don't want to spend too much either. Not after max power style thump it's just lacking IMO. Maybe a trait of the estate due to speaker sizes.

I currently have the 3D sound turned off as I find the upper frequencies a bit over powering. The bass is all the way up on the tone adjustment too. Still way to flat.

Just got a 16 plate S3 with the upgraded sound system and it puts the HK logic system to shame for the low frequency stuff.

HK is appalling in MB compared to Audi and BMW upgrade offerings but it's tolerable.

I think "appalling" is maybe a bit of an exaggeration? :) I personally find the HK in the C63 very good, but maybe that's because I don't have audiophile ears :)

Compared to the HK upgrade in the E9x M3, I think this is better. However I haven't experienced Audi's audio, nor the HK in the latest F80 M3 so maybe they have improved.

I think it's more to do with what kind of music you listen to.

I'm very impressed with the HK system in our SL but I listen to Rock/Pop mostly and the bass is quite crisp. But it needs to be quite a loud volume to benefit.

If you want boomy drum and bass or dance music bass you'll need something else to create that.

I think Commandonline do a speaker upgrade for the HK set up?

Tony.

I would possibly start with boxing in the speakers in the doors to see if that improves the base

It's not bad sound quality it sounds pretty mega when listening to certain tracks, just lacks the low down punch that my Audi has on rock music. My mate reckons a active little sub maybe the way forward. Just don't want to start taking the car apart to run leads all over the place. I use all of the boot space on a regular basis.

I was expecting to find the sub in the spare wheel well, it's actually mounted on the side of the boot and looks tiny which may explain it, been a estate probably doesn't help either.

Will check out commandonline.

We do offer a cracking upgrade to the standard HK system. Email me over the VIN to [email protected]. Or pop over and have a listen to our demo car that has HK but with the rather nice upgrade applied ;)

To date we have done this upgrade on 11 C class cars (at least five of them C63's. Every customer has smiled :thumb:

I had Individual Audio in the M3 and it was sublime. Best system I've had.

Thanks :)

I've got to say I'm pretty unimpressed with the HK audio in my e63. I'm not sure whether the drivers are poor, the amp is not up to scratch, or both, but the sound is thin, slightly screechy and etched. I am a notorious audio snob, and have a very nice system at home, but I expected a high-end factory fit system to be a lot more impressive. it really isn't very much better than the Audio 20 system in my old 2004 E320 CDi.

I'll be popping over to listen to the system at command.co.uk, and if it improves anything I'll be straight in there.

Cheers,
Alex

I agree. The HK system in our E63 is Rubbish. The HK in our S211 is leagues better.

Actually I'm being a little harsh. It is bit better than I remembered when just listening to dab radio, perhaps I don't expect much, but cd audio and USB ipod is so so. Detail is there but the frequency balance seems a bit odd, and the lf channel in the boot is definately quite limited in output. I think some better speakers in the doors might improve things. Even quite expensive domestic HiFi speaker drivers cost peanuts when spending 4 figures, so car audio standard fit must cost pennies. Main issue when on the move is that the system looses the battle against tyre and engine noise all too easily, even if it sounds OK when parked up. Not sure that new speakers will help much with that unfortunately.

Just a 5cents... Morel speakers are something from another planet. Cost a fortune, but worth every penny. Try upgrading tge front scene to morels..maybe you will not even want to a sub upgrade. Or poasibly find someonw who has them. The key in auto aound upgrades is listening or relying on professionals to know better. We all have different ears. The problem in UK, no body has demo speakers in vast quantities in their shops. So it is friends, word of mouth, fellow forum comrades. I am sure someone near you will be pleased to show off their set ups.
