HK system needs more thump

yes i have the morel front and rear plus the cerwin vega amp and powered sub in the inner rear wing

Hopefully this addresses a few interests;

We have developed a very nice set of upgrades for customers with and without HK in their car. Having HK helps as the amplification is already there. That said, a simple speaker swap on the non HK cars can deliver astonishing results.

Its not though just a speaker swap. We do use our expertise and knowledge to 'tweak' the installation. On some HK cars we also fix the amp issues that can be a problem sometimes.

Morel speakers themselves start at about £180 for a pair of front door components. This gets you the midrange and tweeter for both doors. However installing them correctly and then doing the rears aswell will push the price up. There is a Morel range to suit all budgets from £180 (supply only) upwards.

If anyone wants a quotation then please just email me your vin number with a brief note saying what you want to achieve from the upgrade and we will come back to you.

Or pop over and have a listen to our demo car!

Decided to look into getting a active sub. Not decided on which yet, leaning towards the focal bus range or the infinity. Ideally I can squeeze in boot area around spare wheel.

I have HK in my lovely old 55k. Sounds fine.

The best audio upgrade I did was fitting c63 boxes, opening the windows, and turning the radio off.

Funny old world! ;)

Also purged all the low bit rate albums from the commands hard drive and reloaded at a much higher bit rate. This has made a massive difference. Original CDs still sound the best.

I fiond the opposite , to much thump on my HK..as I only listen to 5 live it gets to much "Thump" when Prime minsters questions" is airing...

Have a look at the Cerwin Vega powered sub. Its a 10" system and delivers terrific bass for its size. It can be easily installed under the rear parcel shelf or behind a boot trim.

Gasman2 do you have a saloon by any chance. I don't think it will go on the rear quarter on the wagon.

Thanks chaps will Defo take the Vega solution. Top brand. If it's really good I may replace the one in the S3 too:)

Back in the day my friend put one of the 18inch vega strokers in his car and god it was loud. Think he probably spent more on the in car entainment than the car...

no mine is a coupe

That Cerwin looks great, especially like the alu enclosure.

Cerwin Vega VPAS10 under seat subwoofer hits the UK | In Car Advancements UK

I don't know why it's called an "under seat" as there's no way it'd fit under there.

If I wanted to put it in the boot, where would I get the remote feed from? Also, would I have to run a thick gauge cable from the battery, through the bulkhead, under all carpets into the boot like I did in my crap Fords years ago?

For remote I plan to use a 12v switched wire. Probably tap into one in rear fuse box.
I intend to run decent power cable / fuse from battery direct. Still have good cables from when I was more into car sound systems. Earth will be from existing chassis point or I will create a new one.

Think I will tap off current sub for high level outputs, probably use a decent line level converter to RCA type plug.

Bit rusty on all of this but I am sure it will all come back to me once have the thing in bits.

The battery on the AMG wagon is in the boot so easy beers. For the remote you are only after a signal so should be plenty in the boot area to tap into. I personally wouldn't wire amp power source off a non direct fused feed from the battery just in case.

Will have a proper look when I get a chance and take a few photos.

Oh is the remote wire simply any 12v live? It doesn't draw current, so can be tapped onto anywhere? I thought it might be some kind of signal, as I've always had them go to the back of the stereo.

If you're coming off the existing speakers for high level, why do you need a high to line level converter? It's got high level inputs?

When I was more into aftermarket car audio, I ran 4 awg power from the battery, underneath the car, properly cable tied etc to things and in through a removable drain plug at the bottom of the boot, as to not irreversibly damage anything. I'll do something similar again as the W204 has a drain plug at the bottom of the boot well too, under the spare tyre. Much better, neater and easier than running it through the bulkhead, trying to get it at the back of the passenger footwell, then all the way to the boot. My piddly little 3L V6 non-AMG mobile doesn't have the battery in the boot, so I'll resort to my old ways. :)

Yeah, I've still got my inline fuse somewhere.

Are you getting close to ordering the cerwin vega vpas10?

the remote just needs tapping off any item that is triggered by ignition. It's a switch really not remote. So a easy one would be the fuse block for the cig lighter etc.

I found in the old days the sound used to be better via rca,s for some reason. Possibly something to do with the circuitry between the input and output differing. Also the hi lo box filters unwanted noise, which is the main reason.

Some of the newer hi lo box's have remote trigger output which could simplify things for remote lead installation.. They also have time delay to which prevents clicking when switching on and off.

I am going to double check the sub unit first before pushing the button. Job for the weekend. To be honest like you I am way out of touch and will be winging it a bit. The last car I had to do this on was a new type r I bought in 2001. Since then every other car has been fine.

HK in my E63 is easily the worst I've heard in this class of car. Audi and BMW are leagues ahead.

I now have very good sound, courtesy of

1. Audison amplifier, and
2. bit one sound processor
3. Turn off 'surroundsound' or whatever the damn thing's called.

The E63 comes with a fitted sub - with the sound processed this is just about acceptable. The standard speakers are OK.

With the added equipment the difference is night and day. Total cost (fitted) £600.

Very much happier with the car now.
