Hmmm thoughts on this ULEZ tip car runaround.....

I love it! But then I love verts, having had 5 over the years, from a 1937 Morris 8 tourer to a Volvo C70, building the ‘No roof at all’ 3-wheeler on the way…

Sold - and saved me from myself...

Got me thinking though... Winter runaround, keep the SLK for (mostly) Summer use. So need not be a convertible, in fact probably better not. This might fit the bill...

Good tip car, too, without the rear seats. Hmmm...

Any opinions? Be quick...

Wouldn't be for me: Cat N write off and fiddled with. Although 230bhp in a Mini must be a hoot and it's cheap.

He’s had the car a couple of months. That plus a lot of excuses is a Nono for me.

Very lovely looking car and price seems about right but my Spidey senses are piqued by the fact that the seller hasn't owned it for long. Something doesn't feel right here ...

Thanks for that. That's 'no' from me too, I think.

Or just maybe.... the seller's just got back to me, and he's got a sports cat he'll throw in with it. It do look jolly nice, and the Cat N doesn't bother me; I had a Cat N Saab Aero back in the day, and it was superb.

Besides, "Absolutely brilliant car which wants to go at any opportunity..." My SLK is just like that...

I sold my car to a fellow forum member, who was appreciative of the work done by Comand UK on it (COMAND retrofit and audio upgrade). I would do the same if I was buying a car and it was modified by a reputable firm that I trust to have done a decent job.

However, if I was presented with a car that has been modified from the original by an unknown person or persons, I would have run a mile. There's so much butchering that can take place when you don't know what you're doing. Sorry.

"We've" had convertibles for most of "our" three decades together, and they're fine, and bargains, as second cars, Plenty of low mileage, well maintained ones around.

But can't stand MINI convertibles. A friend has had a 2005 since new. To my eyes it's a scuttle shakey roller skate. Plenty around, lots of private owners - classic pre-marriage, and parent of teenagers car.

Hate the the higher performance MINI hatchbacks, Runflats ruin the handling IMHO.

So I'll recommend my Mx5's. The world's favourite convertible. Cheaper than chips, easy on the eye, and can be driven safely at a naughty pace when she's not in it.

And BTW: the factory visit to MINI Cowley is excellent. All the MINI's are allegedly bespoke, built to a specific customer order. (I don't believe it).

SOLD> So did you buy it?

I might buy a convertible just so I can park it as far away as possible from the supermarket door leaving the roof down , go inside the windowless building so I can't see my car despite the fact that pushing a button would close the roof with minimum effort.

Why do they do that ?

I raised this question (pun intended) years ago on here . I think a few replied that a bird had never $hit in the car/never vandalised/never rained on in years of doing just that. Lucky you.

But why do it . I could leave all my windows and sunroof open but never do , I doubt anyone on here does. So why do it when you have a convertible car ??

Sorry for the thread hijack.

How about a normal Cooper S hatch with the run flats dumped ?

A straight 2 seater is a definite no no. Need space to occasionally chuck the dogs in the back even if it necessitates dumping the rear seats.

So what would the forum suggest ?

Small, fast, fun ULEZ hatchback for 3k that I can use every day for my 12 mile commute. My route has 12 dual carriageway roundabouts so my major concern is the "drop to second blast from the roundabout fun factor"

I don't actually know how much space length wise I have in my garage but a CLK does not fit but a Corrado does !

Definitely the same length as a Corrado

Sounds pretty good. My friend, Mr Cooper, has just bought a 2012 Cooper S which he loves.

Runflats? Down to personal taste and risk. If you're always close to home and the AA, I'd throw those runlets as far as I could.

Test drives required, methinks. I'd go for a two owner, "little old lady who went to church on Sunday" types

I thought the 2006 Cooper S rode better than the earliest models, and had a better looking dashboard.

Here's the CAR mag review: Mini Cooper S (2006) review

If for the odd tip trip what about the estate version (the clubman?)

Rear set access was the only gripe with these, but if it's essentially a van....

PS, the modded category one is a barge pole magnet. Think of all the rules for buying a used car and you're ticking most boxes
