So the C205 we bought recently did have cold AC, but now it's blowing HOT air, not just ambient.

Is that just because air con needs regassing, or does it point to a more serious issue?

It should only need topping up of the gas every year or 2 or 3. If it's not working soon after buying this must be pre existing. If bought from a Trader, take the car back ASAP and get them to rectify. If you're within 30 days of sale from a Trader and they are playing silly buggers, reject the car is an option.

Don't be fobbed off by 'warranty', they can't sell a car with a fault and have to fix it under consumer law.

I had the very same problem with my w205 C250d after a couple of months. It was not the gas but a pressure sensor on the condenser rad, £54 from stealers £260 all in after gasing twice. Its connected to the pump and can be tripped out to engage clutch if your tech knowes what he is doing to test if its faulty.

How long/easy is it take to replace the sensor please?

About an hour, front bottom tray has to come òff to get at it and the system has to be emptied first hence mine was filled twice as it was a little under pressure at first but that didn't fix it. The clutch didn't kick in so next test was pressure censor.

When i changed my aircon condenser (radiator) a couple of years ago, the pressure sensor was corroded stuck in the condensor/fitting. I had to cut the pipe in the associated fitting to be able to get it off the car.

Changing the cheap pressure sensor now and slightly lubing the thread on the bolt in the associated fitting could help prevent the issue i experienced from occuring. Might be worth an ask of whoever is doing the job (assuming the C class parts are very similar or the same as the E class parts).

When you do get the AC fixed use it all the time, winter and summer.
Nothing has gone wrong my 2005 CLK AC, it's on all the time.
It's a good practice to use your AC regularly, both in winter and summer, to keep it in good working condition. Your 2005 CLK's AC has been running smoothly because of this habit, as it helps prevent issues from arising due to prolonged periods of inactivity.

Only recently had Car serviced at local MB service centre.

At the start of Motorway journey today in my W169, the heating acted as though I had turned on the fan. The cabin was excessively warm, even though temperature set at minimum (outside temperature 14 degrees). AirCon wouldn’t engage, besides the AC light being on. It’s no fun Motorway driving with Windows open. Otherwise, demising Windows with fan on was like driving in a Sauna.

What’s likely to be at fault?

Odd. I drove back home the next day on the M40/42 with my driver’s Window open, in knowledge that my heater/air conditioning was faulty. Then, as I got home, I engaged the air conditioning to check out the extent of the problem - only to find the air conditioning was now working! What the….
