How acurate is the oil guage method ?

Friday night, driving from Preston to Mull of Kintyre. Oil warning light comes on M74, Hamilton area, continue to drive for 1 hour plus.

Stopped at Gourock before joning the ferry. Done the electronic check. Dial says "Add 2ltrs". I had a one ltr bottle in the boot. Added. Waited 5 mins. Dash board new reading says "oil plenty". Could the sensor be faulty ? and where exactly is it situated in the block ?

I wish I could dip manually as this electronic method is for the birds.

Tomorrow, I will do an oil change anyway. 6k since last change. Chevron 5-40 fully syn, and Euro filter Hengst.

On the newer W203's you can see the sump content in litres in a hidden menu, and there was a post the other day about doing it on older models, but not sure if it works on yours.
