How do I know for certain if I have auto wipers

With auto wipers, when turned on and no rain, they do one sweep, then stop, should it rain they will start and wipe while ever the is any water on the screen. if it rains continuously they just wipe all the time in the same way as the first position on non auto wipers.

There is often problems when the car has had a new screen

As a point of information, on the W211 they don't give a single sweep when turned on if the sensor is clean. It's possible to leave the wipers in the first position continually (I don't but I know some who do) and they will only ever start up when it rains.

Your point about screen changes is a good one, particularly if the replacement screen is not from MB.

AND when the drivers door (and maybee passenger door also) is closed. (useful so they dont get soaked). (that's logical AND, i.e. all conditions satisifed)

Technically the rain sensors need recalibrating using Star machine whenver the windscreen is changed (and on A/B the sensor needs to be changed as it has a gel pack between sensor and windscreen, maybee on others too !)

If the sensor isnt changed, you can often get away without recalibration - but I suspect its not as good as it should be in that case.

Cheers

On many cars the wiper does one sweep when first turned on. Many complain about it when they have parked the car with the wiper set to auto. Mine does it (230) as soon as I turn they if left in the auto mode

949 comes up as a paint code, blue

Can you tell me what these are?

949

= "Kaskadenblau", i.e. a certain shade of blue

= Packing for transport

= Telephone pre-wiring with hands-free facility and telephone aerial on roof

= engine with special parts (from 29.05.1996)

What this "special parts" option means, I have no idea though

There yer go.... Blue!!!! :P:P

Know any good opticians?

I'm guessing the codes change with year and model. VIN is the only sure way to go. PM me and Ill generate a data card for you

Kaskadenblau = Cascade Blue, obviously a shade of black :D
