Got a blowout yesterday on the Paris autoroute and so had to come home (320 miles) on the spacesaver.:(

Not something I ever want to do again as the skinny little wheel (well compared to my 265 x 30 x 19s) says max speed 50mph.

Couldn't bear 50 and so travelled at 62 (100 kph) to just keep ahead of the lorries.

Is 50 truly their maximum speed?

Took us hours to drive home but at least it was safer.

Handling definately effected.

Makes me want to put a spare alloy in the boot next time we go to France !

Blowout was at 80mph (i had slowed becasue the wheel was vibrating and in retrospect had a puncture) and then BANG !.

Car was superb. Didn't stray and was able to crawl into a laybay on the autoroute.

50 mph is the legal limit, but not sure what it is in rest of europe. Wouldn't fancy going to fast on the spare looks to skinny and therefore would effect handling/ esp tooo much.

Any reason why you didn't call Mobilo Life ? They would have come out to you and replaced the tyre, or at least helped you get it done at a local dealer. Been v good for me like that in the past.

I figures that as we were technically mobile theyt wouldn't want to know. We tried 2 tyre depots and an Audi dealer and all agreed getting a 19" tyre would be very very difficult. They had none in stock.

So decided to trudge to the ferry as we were in danger of missing it.

I would say 50mph is about as fast as I would want to go on a space saver wheel, Every time I see a car transporter with wrecked cars on them there are always some with space saver wheels fitted, I can only conclude the drivers chose to ignore the 50mph warning. Cornering must be really scary on those skinny little tyres

I think they have been fitted to get the vehicles mobile after the accidents.

This is more than often the case.
Due to the very nature of these 'spacesaver' wheels, any car is rendered unsafe as soon as one is fitted, and therefore IMHO should be banned ASAP.
