How fast should my wipers go?

I've had auto wipers on other cars and they always switch to the second speed when it pours down. On my W210 they only do speed one, even my son's 306 goes to full speed. Is that right?

Mine does, I leave them on auto and they go from intermitant to single speed to full speed as the rain increases. And the opposite way when the rain goes off.

When I cant get out of the SL it will be a diesel something or other MB without doubt

My W203 didn't alter speed on Auto, remained constant speed setting "1".

The Mondeo however does vary the auto speed depending on rain conditions.
