Has anyone resprayed an sl,replaced all rubbers,How much would it be roughly and who would be good to use around the midlands if poss,
like a good job done???

There's just so many variables that any guides would be very very approximate at best.

R107s suffer quite badly from rust, so I would imagine that would play a large part in the scope of works. New panels/welding needed etc?

If it's just faded paint, scratches, minor dings etc then the cost would obviously be less labour intensive and therefore cheaper, but I understand that the 107 can hide rot well in places.

As a ball park I think you're probably going to be looking at upwards of £2k, but depending on how much work is needed and where you take it, I guess it could end up costing twice that or more - especially if you need any new panels, rubbers, welding etc.

You might find a smaller place who'll work for a lower labour rate but the cost of materials will be fairly static - so you pays your money and all that. Some great one-man-bands about and some rubbish big places - good idea to stick with a recommendation.

You'll get exactly what you pay for.
If you want a great job I doubt £2k will do it.
Replacement rubbers and rear screen alone for my R129 were quoted north of £1k.
Genuine panels will be in the hundreds, and pattern parts although cheaper probably wont be a great fit.

i know some gr8 painter who will do it for 1k in north london, but same colour so long as it does do not have many problem with dents n rust

If the car is in some sort of good order you still wouldn't get any change out of £2k

As people say if the car needs new panels or welding (more then likely) you will be upto £4k and some

I have a 107 to start in the new year, will be having a repaint new rubbers and fully srtripped including welding and a budget of £4k has been set with the customer.
I have also done blow/over tidy jobs from £1,500

Hope this helps??

depending on the condition of your car, i suspect as soon as you start to remove the bumpers and other trim you'll need to do some rust repair here and there. if you require new wings then try beevers auto panels. £170 each (£400 each from Stealer) and they fit very well. when you take the wings off check for rust on the inner wing. no point in repainting a car without fixing the hidden rust underneath.

Thanks for all the great advice,I know its a "how long is a piece of string question"
The car in question is an 88 300sl in decent order, but the last owner used a brillo pad i reckon,so has quite a few surface scratches.I know of Steve Griffin his est around 6k not expencive for what he produces HIS WORK IS VERY GOOD but I thought there might be better value to be had in the current climate. As this car has 120,000 miles on the clock,i am 4th owner est value £10,000 in top nick, fine line whether its worth the investment, I wonder ????its hard to know

I have just had a VW caddy restored and painted. It needed many new panels etc. It came to £3k. The panles were cheap too.

I know this has probably been said before, but it might be worthwhile getting in touch with a professional detailer if you want the scratches seen to. You might find that you don't need a respray afterall. Worth asking for a few proper detailers' opinions on your car's paint.
As has been said before, a respray can vary in price massively, and the only way of making a decision is to see the place's previous work before committing yourself.

If its only down to light scratches you should be able to get a good job done for £2k, being a later model rust isn't as bad.

being a later model rust isn't as bad

please insert an "always" after isn't!

You can be lucky and find a pre 85 one with no rust and you can be unlucky and find a post 85 one that's got more holes than swiss cheese.

(85 is the year they started galvanising the shells)

I know of an Indy that bought a 1989 300SL for £500 because it was very untidy. By the time he was finished it looked like a brand new car and he sold it for £12000. He didn't make a penny......

Here here to the galvanised ones - nut I too have seen them with lots of bubbles as I recall the glavanising reduces in effect as the years go on - although I may be wrong.

Having gone to the clsssic car show yesterday I saw some cars with great paint (the SL shop), and some other cars, which to be frank looked like Norman had had painted them in a shed.

What I'm saying is no matter how good or bad your SL it deserves at least a semi-decent paint job? To get it done and it looks no better with pin holes in the paint and flat areas would be heart breaking - look a the quality of work you get.

If E London would be an option then Hardev at Sira Motors in Dagenham does excellent paint - not too cheap though if you have to paint the whole car..... He's done paint on my SL and also brand news BMW's - cannot recommend him enough.
