Today I felt I made signifcant progress with my back and hands to run some errands I needed to do.

I drove my C class to the shops to do a spot of Christmas shopping, to the tip to dump some old VHS tapes (I have them on the DVDs now) and over to the dentist to have a tooth filled.

The car really impressed me hitting 38mpg driving well over err 70 (KPH LOL) and it was hushed, bar Pink Floyds Division bell playing, comfortable and capable of swallowing the rubbish, and shopping, oh, and comfortable for a back pain sufferer, plus the reassurance of ample torque to pass some dawdlers on the A814.

Well done Mercedes, you pulled a blinder with this:thumb:

Christmas??

My missus has been cooking all afternoon and there are Christmas films on the kitchen telly, what's going on? I haven't missed a couple of months have I?

glad your enjoying it you deserve it after all the problems the old one gave you! One question though do you ever miss the old V6 engine!

A unique offer came my way which made shopping wallet friendlier today than others.

The V6 certainly has the advantage of power and refinement. The performance of the C220cdi isn't bad, I'd miss the V6 more if I had gone for an E class given the size of the E, the V6 is more useful.

Interestingly I've driven a C320cdi, its a lot quicker than my car, particularly past 70mph....BUT I don't miss the engine as I associate it with 7g which quite frankly I hated, the spacing of the gears IMHO were all wrong for my sort of back road driving, the the box harsh and slow.

The 4pot car is more responsive too, definately more fleet of foot initially and the box infinately better.

At town speeds I would say I miss the V6, its a lot quiter and smoother, and at very very high speeds I might miss it, but 95% of the time its pluses were an irrelevance.

i was considering the w204 before I got the CLS i wonder if i made the right choice now!

CLS is a great car. I've driven two. Its way more luxurious than a 204 in terms of trim and ambience, but its a big thing and whilst on open roads it will deliver 95% of the handling of a 204, on narrower roads like we have up here, it can be a tad big.

I've been after an estate, I go camping, take cameras etc around, BBQs, they are ideal, but the CLS is an awesome car.

thanks steve but I've noticed the w204 doesn't have many problems if any at all unlike the list for CLS ahh well at least I got the approved used warranty. Btw if an inlet port motor fails would it be covered by the tier 1 warranty?

Aye, mine was. A subsquently failure once Tier one expired wasn't.

The reason I bought the 204 is as you highlighted. After the manifolds, 2x port motors and that flaring shift, I couldn't go another V6CDi 7g and I dind't want to fuel a 55AMG (needed for 5g box)

Glad the new motor is living up to expectations!

I had a C200 CDI (with a 7G) as a courtesy car recently. It was definitely a bit more gruff around town than the V6 but very quiet on the open road, other than a little bit of four cylinder rumble. It felt much lighter and more agile through the bends than the E class, but as an old codger, I missed the 'waft' of the E class. I liked the instrumentation on the C class though - the displays looked really clear and a generation ahead of my W211.

These cars look fantastic and I love the way they wrap themselves around you - great low driving position and supportive seats. Whilst I love my car I admit they are much more of a driver's experience than the E. I have had a couple of very low powered petrol W204 loan cars and my dad has exactly your car, which I think is an excellent engine and trim for the car.

I also completely agree with you on leather vs cloth seats - hate having to tuck in my t shirt before a long journey to avoid sticking!

I met Greig for lunch a few weeks back, and he says exactly that, nice but it doesn't waft like your old one.

Its fine on the open road, grumbles a tad, and I mean a tad, but at NSL speeds you don't hear the engine over the road noise and if you have Pink Floyd on, you can just hear that. The instrumentation is just an evolution of that in the W211, the big central speedo, trip computer etc is leagues ahead of the BMW system and was a bigger factor in picking a C class than you may think;)

Been driving my CLS a lot this week (except yesterday when we took the hybrid for a drive down to Hayling Island for some sun and sea - average 69mpg! :bannana:) and I really do love it. For me the handling on the twisties is just fine and the power for blasting past other cars is amazing. If it behaves itself, it may be a keeper for a couple of years after all. And, I'm thinking when it does go, maybe a 2010 Grand Edition would be nice... :)

Glad you're enjoying your new car Steve - you deserve it!

Here's a photo I took on friday - why I love the CLS so much.. :D

The first generation CLS was evidently designed by an American Michael Fink who was also responsible for the first CLK and I detect American "chop shop" influence in its styling. :thumb: Its a true "automotive statement " that has a flamboyant road presence like few other 4 seaters imho  The second generation CLS was I believe designed by a Korean[ albeit working in an American design house] and although I see elements of oriental influence in its form it has more of a "design by committee" feel about it --- and despite being a stunning vehicle in it's own right is more chop suey than chop shop if you get my drift. :p

Glad you like your estate Steve-- the automatic opening/closing rear door which I felt was a bit of a gimmick at first now turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread!

Totally agree. Still not keen on the new CLS.... but think the 219 is a style icon (for large saloons).

Yes, and I think its the only MB that doesn't pull off silver, looks better in dark colours.

I hope yours works out, sometimes thats the thing with "sheds". When they work they are so good, and that lets the heart tell us to keep them on for longer than we would if they were merely ok. Thats why I kept my E class so long, it was epic when it worked.

Turns out so is my C class, its just a bundle of fun

Me too!!

Maybe the difference is I've got a definite "rule" that it's got one life left and as long as it gives no more trouble (other than reasonable things all cars do) I'll keep it another year or two. But, one more expensive issue and it's gone, no ifs or buts! So CLS, it's down to you! :D
