Ideas and suggestions for circa £2k or less shed or a car

Oh boy @Darrell I love that Saab rag top.
Unfortunately, being the man, I can't have the fun car, I have to have the load lugging, trip to tip carrying, child eating and vomiting abuse wagon.
Currently, I'm super careful with the E. Shoes off. Child lifted into seat. No food or drink in the back. Pay for delivery or renting a van.
But getting the little boy in the back of the convertible plus load lugging might be an issue.
We have a France trip in the summer, and the E will (or would, depending on how this goes) be awesome for it.
We’ve been looking for a Saab cabrio for a while now but something always crops up to thwart the plans.
My sister has had 3 of them and sold the last one in 2019 to get an E Class cabrio. I should’ve bought hers.

My money would be on a CR-V. Had 2 with absolutely no issues. Mind you, they were both 2.1 Diesels.

We bought one of these recently. Perfect for the ghetto. (Mill Hill Broadway, the garden centre and M&S food shopping).

Just had a nose at Honda CRV’s and they’re quite pricey.
My mum has got a W plate Toyota RAV4 that she has caned everywhere and is now wearing French plates. It still runs 100%.

If there's no diesel available then most of the UK's road distribution network will grind to a halt ...
Not no diesel.
Potentially 60% diesel available
due to sanctions

This is only my view. I'm expecting no one to agree with this. I'm considering the switch to petrol as a hedge to predominantly avoid the pain of not being able to get diesel.

As above, I doubt diesel availablity will be an issue and with so few miles you can tank the E up and top up when you need to / can.

If swapping out suits you though, for £2k, there could be this

Saab

I like them and there’s shit loads of room in the back for all my bikes and stuff.

You want bullet proof, reliable family load lugger that will do starship mileage and only require servicing? Toyota or Lexus everytime. Lexus more solid, more toys. Lexus Dealers still sell 10 yr old cars with 12 month warranty.

RX450 hybrid best, RX350 v good. Always petrol, they don’t do Diesel. 100k? Just run in.

But as mentioned virtually every truck & van in the UK runs on diesel, and almost all agricultural vehicles. So if supply was cut by 40% the whole country would be in big trouble.

Just my view that it's a possibility BTB. Not asking anyone to agree or debate it 👍

Keep the merc and buy any old well maintained Toyota / Lexus or Honda petrol model. The Japanese diesels are OK but they are not as reliable as the petrol cars. Imo some of the best cheapies are late 90s early to mid 00s low mileage low owner Corolla/Yaris/RAV4/Avensis/Camry/Civic/Accord/Prelude/IS200/GS300 etc etc - because once you've bought a good rust free one they just keep going

I think that the OP has a point about diesel availability. It has already started to be a minor issue on the
evidence that the price has increased more than petrol. If there was no constraint on world supplies of diesel that increased price differential wouldn't have occurred. As we import 20% of our refined diesel from Russia and have vouched to end that by the end of the year, then that would suggest a potential availability issue unless other imports or UK refineries can make up the deficit. A hedge against a diesel shortage might be a smart move.

Mercedes B Class,

SAAB Estates,

or James Bond's Casino Royale car.

If it's only 3k miles a year, why not an A or B class. Why not a ....VW Golf ?

Now Bond is in trouble for sure. Trading a perfectly reliable Ford in for that money pit Range Rover !!

If Diesel were ever to become super rare the government would ration it to keep Fire Engines , ambulances , military vehicles on the road. Followed by hauliers.

If we ever get to that position the value of an old E class (or any other car) would not be anyone's biggest worry.

OP , try to find a decent
petrol Zafira A or B . I have mentioned on here before that the 2004 1.8 petrol Zafira we own is possibly the dullest vehicle I have ever driven , but as a family load hauler (for the price) It will take some beating . We have had it for 16 years

Good luck .

Cheers @Petrol Pete

Yeah, I mention rationing in post#7 as the likely outcome should my crazy opinion materialise. Hence the potential search for a petrol.

I had a Zafira or Meriva as an airport run hire car one time. I totally concur about the dullness, and it was the funniest thing driving it. There seemed to be no input feel between the controls and the vehicle operation.
The steering was the same resistance regardless of the manoeuvre, the more you pressed the brake down or the more you pressed the accelerator, the faster the car slowed down or speed up, but there was no change in resistance during those operations. It was something close to driving a car with a games console controller.

For that reason I discounted, but on your recommendation I'll reconsider that.

Honestly , for years I have been asking the boss if she would like a different car ,we don't really need all the 7 seats , load capacity or tow bar as much theses days, The roof box went into storage years ago , but she is happy with the devil she knows (she refuses to drive my C55 V8 AMG :p) and is sticking with it.

Zero rust (lived its whole life outside and never seen a real valet) other than wear/service items the only thing I have replaced is the thermostat - an half hour job - Being a 1.8 petrol it has rear discs (Wow !!) the 1.6 petrols had drums and some other smaller components .

It depends on what you need a car for but a decent E class is a hard act to follow.
