'07 CLS, the ignition key is slightly 'sticky' when removing it from the lock, it doesn't pull out cleanly. Spare one's the same. Any ideas? More of a niggle than anything else, but wondering if it'll get worse.

Locksmiths "lubricate" locks with graphite, because using oil type lubricants tends to bung up the movement with a gunge that consists of the oil base mixed with the accumulated detritus.
Presuming that you won't have any graphite for locks, a popular approach is to find an old pencil (as soft a grade as possible) and rub it all over the blade of your key. Repeat a few times, and the action should transfer some of the pencil's graphite into the lock thereby freeing up the action.
Hth.
+1 for the above Not experienced it myself but if fails with the steering lock on I believe it becomes quite a big job , especially if the car is parked away from home .
If it is a traditional key Lidl do graphite lubricant in a can , but obviously being Lidl you have to wait for it to pop up randomly in the middle isle !.

Can you hear the ESL every time you insert/extract the key ?
It's often that silly little Scalextric motor that fails; as Pete says apparently a relatively easy job to replace until it fails with the wheel in the locked position, when it becomes a complete ballache.
