Well I finally removed the old ignition switch and having got the part number have ordered a second hand switch and key from eBay. What next? I believe I have to get it programmed to my car somehow. Any advice please. Many thanks. Car is CLK230 Cabriolet. Year 2000.

Not sure but . Most expensive new cars have sophisticated anti-theft systems that incorporate a type of fob with the key. The ignition switch is simply a switch, but has electronics attached that when powered “talk” via wifi energy with the fob. If for any reason the electronics fail, or the fob is lost or damaged, it has to be re-programmed at not a cheap cost. Always insist on a spare fob because the engine immobiliser can not be over-ridden and you will then need a flat top to move the vehicle to a dealer to get it fixed. They will insist on registration and ownership details and ID before doing the work.

Thanks for reply. The key fob is not the problem. Car will start and drive. It’s just I have no wipers indicators windows don’t work and other electrical problems.

Do yu know how to do a reset ? maybe you have lost some information in computer, after replacing the switch .

Yes. First thing I did when problem started was disconnect the battery for half an hour but no luck. I have not received replacement switch yet but I’m sure it’s more than a question of connecting it up turning the key and the car will start.

Had new switch fitted on my CLK years ago, I think it had to be coded using MB STAR diagnostics.
