car is 93 e280 estate.

the heater vents do not illuminate under the 3 dials in either the outside or 2 middle vents. Are they on an independant fuse to everything else or are they linked to rest of dashboard (which works fine)?

If, as i suspect, they are all linked, does anyone have suggestions of where to look for the inevitable broken wire!!

I do not think that they should or do light up

Malcolm; having re-read my post i dont think i am explaining well. its the actual dials that you use to select the amount of air flow from each vent. they light up on my '94 coupe when the side or main lights are switched on.

Thank you Matt, apart from the little red fuse on the rear of the cluster, I will leave it to someone else to help, I have one computer down.

I feel sure that this came up a few weeks ago

I seem to be particularly rubbish at using the search facility - i never seem to ask the right query.

have since found a few posts so i will give it a try. thanks for your help

All the dash illumination is common. Just replace the bulbs - they're available from an MB dealer for a few pence each

I once made a very long post about how to change these bulbs, before realising that all you do is pull the knobs out and the bulbs are there :)

Should be the same with yours? Pair of mole grips, put a rag around the teeth, gentle pull out?

mattc could have posted his findings, I thought it was about the vent dial lights, not the AC knobs.

It has been probably at my W123 time since I've had an issue with the instrument cluster lights. It was using a single bulb with light guides to those difficult to reach places (making it not necessary to change bulbs from those difficult to reach places). Modern cars must be using leds to avoid the need to change bulbs?

Diesel Benz you are right, it is the vent dial lights I am on about. I need to get 3 x 3w bulbs fromMB and will let you know if the solution is that simple.

have found the relevant section in Haynes know too so it looks simple enough:rolleyes:

Hi,
I don't have a Haynes, so how do I get to the bulbs of the dial?
Thanks

update

outer vent light bulbs changed. simple enough. just need 4 hands to hold all 4 clips out at the same time! solution is open 2 clips at a time and manouvere one side out then the other.

problem is the central vent...simple enough to remove as per the Haynes manual. the pig is getting at the bulb. this is fixed in the central rotating section and i don't see any release catches...any help any one?

i have reinstalled the vent...happy to have 2 out of the 3 rather than none as previously...

matt
