Hi,
I am new to this forum, so hello to all. I currently own a Seat Alhambra for the kids and a 1965 mustang for me. The Seat is rubbish and the ford too old to be reliable so I am now after a CL55 AMG that we can share. I am not especially bothered with running costs (1k a year tops) but don't want to buy a dog.

I have seen this baby and I am tempted:

03/03 Mercedes CL55 AMG SpeedShift Auto Coupe on eBay (end time 23-Mar-10 18:36:24 GMT)

Bloke says MB service @ 23,34,47 then 'specialist' @ 62,75 & 88. Is currently on 92k. No bodywork probs on rear windscreen sill only a few stone chips. 2 owner car.

What do you guys reckon on the value of this? Or should I steer clear? Other than the potential rust probs what else should I look out for?

Cheers!
Jake.

Define running costs? You'll be lucky to get away with just £1k a year on any AMG.

The kompressor version is a stunning car and I've been tempted myself a few times. The corrosion problems are well documented throughout the forum - it isn't rust but galvanic corrosion, the body mostly being aluminium.

Hey, thanks for the replies...by 1k I meant miles not pounds. Sorry for not being clearer!

Thanks for the pointer on the rust problems...I have searched this forum and google and it seems that the problem can be fixed foc under the MB 30 year warranty.

What small print can the dealers use to get out of this? Or they do not bother...just do the work and charge it back to head office ;-).

Not always the case, there are certain rules regarding what MB will and won't do. Not all is covererd by the 30 year warranty, do your homework first as you might get a big surprise.

Merc service

Personally I wouldn't buy a car with that sort of mileage that didn't have a full Merc history. Although it's specialist, I would be concerned in case something cropped up that a specialist had missed in a service. They are complicated cars and things do go wrong occassionally !

Full MBSH gives higher resale value and this one looks fairly priced bearing in mind a specialist history, but I'd rather pay more and have the comfort factor.

Stunning cars though, absolutely brutal performance, gorgeous exhaust note and still extremely refined. I love mine to bits. Warranty Direct aftermarket warranty for £50/month and you can't go far wrong :thumb:

There is the ABC suspension as well, which can be a very expensive problem if it goes wrong. The rust is between the C Pillar and the rear wing where the Aluminium meets the Metal wing, after 2003/2004 they started galvanizing the metal which seems to have sorted the problem.

It's not rust . Ferrous metals rust, aluminium corrodes.

IMHO the car in the link above looks very cheap. I'd expect it to be a not particularly great example considering the mileage and the price - perhaps a few faults to address and would expect it to cost more to run than a lower mileage car with full MBSH.

£15k is the downpayment, you need to allow a few thousand a year for maintenance.

Not saying that it's a bad car or anything, but there's a reason why these £100k cars are now being sold for £15k or so. They are still £100k cars when they go wrong and need servicing, of which they'll need much more of now that they're 7 years old, out of warranty and have nearly 100k on them :)

Having said all that, they're certainly a lot of car for the money :thumb:

Whether it rusts  or corrodes , it's a big problem. Not every body shop knows how to repair aluminium.

MB should be quite good at it by now given the number of W215s they've sold :D.

Sadly a large part of me just thinks "***k it and buy it" and worry (or not) about the expense when it comes up. Maybe sell a kidney or something. What's the going rate these days?

If you've driven it then you'd have bought it by now :-) You can live with only one kidney anyway.

If you have the money to buy it and a decent amount of disposable income every month in case the worst happens then go for it.

It took me ages to buy my CLK55 AMG but I am so glad I did now. Just don't buy it if your spending all your spare money on it, as it might come back and bite you.

You're right I haven't driven it, its 170 miles away so I am looking for a test drive closer to home before I bother with such a long journey. I do have the spare cash thankfully, but I'll take the advice and aim for a lower mileage car or at least one with full MB history. Cheers fellas.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. 2003 facelift supercharged models will hold their value and IMHO are worth the extra. If you're close to The Wirral and fancy being scared witless PM me and I'll take you for a blast in mine.

Cheers
