Apologies if this has been posted or mentioned before, but I haven't seen it. Clearly this isn't a recent event and I assume before the prolific use of helicopters for such movement of human organs, such a task was genuinely amazing (known, it seems, as "The Liver Run")

It's edge of the seat stuff!

I guess it's on ITV4 during re-runs of the Police Camera Action-type shows as it seems to have been lifted from that channel.

Those SD1s handle well given the speed and the roads...

As one of the comments said "best police force in the world". Great driving with a great ending.

Certainly entertaining viewing and generally skillful driving but I did begin to wonder how many lives were put at risk en-route just for the *possibility* of saving one other, especially when they were belting along on the wrong side of the road at 50 blindly passing buses and lorries on the left with absolutely no possible means of establishing whether anyone was about to cross their path. On balance, I think they made the wrong call and just got lucky that it went without incident.

Surely a helicopter or perhaps even a motorcycle would have been a better safer option?

Interesting route too, certainly not the most direct.

Heh heh

Everyones a critic.

Have you thought of becoming a senior Police Officer? :D

Great viewing.

I guess the bigger question is whether we want a Police Force that is risk aware ("..If a pedestrian had walked out from between parked cars...") or risk averse (don't take any risks).
It means being prepared to accept the flack when things go horribly wrong (DeMenezes) and accept the flack when you save someones life (Spike, above).
:)

I didn't notice much flack accepting going on (De Menezes), looked more like an attempted cover up to me.

Nice find, Bobbo, thanks for posting the links.

What really grinds my gears with these sort of programs is the presenters commentary... "all these miles left to cover and only a few minutes remianing. Will they make it on time?"

Yes. They will. Of course they will otherwise it wouldn't be on telly. Otherwise the commentary would be.. "unfortunately, they were de;ayed by a scaffolders lorry, who had stopped in the middle of the road to chat to his mate. The patient died."

Just give us the details and not the made up drama.

All that aside, brilliant driving and I love the SD1's.

i love it 62mph through a crowded city centre....
With his window down thanking other officers and directing traffic :)!
Love it!!

The SD1 was one of the all-time great Police cars. I believe it was the last one to have special factory modifications (suspension and brakes).

Those were the days when Police drivers were the pinnacle. Since then, they have been "rationalising" - ie closing the Police driving schools, cutting back on training - so many "Police Advanced" drivers are at what was in the 80's "Police Standard".

A good friend, now long retired, was one of the "stars" in a SD1. When the mood takes him, he can make a car sing.

It might sound impossible, but I well remember one evening in a Fiat Ulyssee (people carrier) following an Escort Cosworth.....

Alright, I am puzzled as to the reference to (De Menezes). I cannot find any where this name appears in this post. Please enlighten me as to who or what De Menezes is.

He was caught jumping an Underground barrier while wearing a rucksack, (obvious terrorist behaviour) and was shot in the back of the head for doing so.

I used to live near the police training college in Fife. Friend of a friend took me out in 2.8 Granada. His skills were amazing. Incredibly smooth. At one point the car started to wallow a bit and I thought "aha cheap For dampers". Then I looked at he clocks and we were doing nigh on 120mph. Smooth driving inputs of a racing driver.

That's what the police said at the time, along with a lot of other things which later turned out to be untrue. They were trying to execute a cover up. Swiss Toni quoted this episode as an example of police taking the flack when they take a risk and things go wrong. Just seemed to me that it wasn't a very good example.

Of course I remember the incident now, just me being a bit slow on the uptake. Many thanks Frank O' Phile.

I thought at first it was referring to a member and not using their logon name. As an example, ABC123 posts a statement then EYZ456 replies with a contrary statement saying ABC123 is wrong. Then FGH789 joins in and says Dave is correct.

This is all well and good if everyone knows who Dave is, but confusing to anyone else. OK, it doesn't occur very often but even on rare occasions can be confusing to those not in the know ( creates a private club within the club attitude).

Apologies for going off topic.

John made this point previously.

:D

The point would have to be about an organisation prepared to take risks.

Removing all of the risk preventable by improved training, briefing and equipment (with time and budget constraints), would senior Met Officers be prepared to face the risk of shooting an innocent man, or (for example) make early arrests knowing the chance of conviction was minimal (and so making the streets more dangerous for the population at large).

Some forces have put "non pursuit" policies in place (though you won't find out which they are too easily). Sometimes because they are not prepared to face the flack of being involved in a fatal accident with one of their Officers in tow (but does that make the streets safer in those places, now that the crims can drive however dangerously they like, without the Cops stopping them?). Some have non-pursuit policies because they can't afford the significant cost of maintaining training to the highest standard for a significant number of Officers.

I disagree with posters who suggest that driver training has taken a dive - far from it, it the standard and techniques just get more difficult.
The ethos remains the same - driving defensively.

Great video, nice to see a professional demonstrating their craft.

:)

it was impressive, liked it a lot. Pity some forces only want to do it themselves though and tend to prosecute any other member of the services trying to help move organs at great speed the same way.

Fair comment.
