iPod Nano anyone?

i've never wanted an ipod.. till now! .. very very tempting!

oh yes. Darling daughter was going to buy a shuffle this weekend so she can sneak it into school. Her normal iPod can be seen through the pocket in her kilt ;) Don't think this one will be as visible. I think she might just change her mind and want one of these :D

Looks good, but wonder how good it really is. Have they had to sacrafice output or battery life to slim it down. I suspect holding fire until the 3rd / 4th generation is a better idea. ;)

I went for a Sony NW HD3 and despite initial problems with software, it does what it ways on the label. I didn't go for an iPod because at the time the comparable battery life was no where near as good.

Now I'd be seriously tempted by something much smaller and more portable, but having gone through the pain of transferring hundreds of my CDs onto the NW I really couldn't face doing it all over again.

what does it matter? surely they havnt banned ipods

I've got an Ipod shuffle (1GB) which I will be replacing with a 4GB one of these. Amazon.com are listing them at $249 for the 4GB model but not yet released.

I'll keep the shuffle for my son to listen to audio stories in the car :)

As a side note, I managed to get 350 songs on my shuffle so I would imagine that I'd get more than 1,000 on the 4GB nano. It all comes down to track length.

I'm pretty certain that these new ones are limited to 1000 songs no matter what file size, due to a software 'lock' for the various models.

Oh dear, thats very poor. Why on earth would Apple want to go to the extra expense of placing a lock into the software? surely, the limits will be easily set by the physical memory.

Where did you get the info from? I want to dig around a bit on this.

Thanks.

They are normally conservative estimates though - when iPodLounge tested the mini they got 26 hours out of it, when it was only stated as 16?

I would wait for a bit to see what Creative Labs have to offer in the Zen range.

There is whole new generation of memory based players waiting in the wings.

iPod nano review: Bloomberg

I came across this review. Looks like Nono is cool!
.....................................................................................................

Apple Computer Inc. introduced a phone that runs its iTunes music software and a new iPod nano music player that is the size of a business card.

The company also is adding a collectible version of the iPod based on the Harry Potter novels and will sell songs from singer Madonna through its iTunes store, chief executive officer Steve Jobs said at an event in San Francisco yesterday that featured appearances by Madonna and hip-hop artist Kanye West.

Mr. Jobs wants fresh products such as the silver iTunes phone, built by Motorola Inc., and new designs such as the nano, to parlay demand for the iPod into new areas and to expand sales from iTunes. That may bolster Apple's sales in the holiday shopping season next quarter, analysts said. Apple, which made its name selling Macintosh computers, derives more than a third of its sales from iPod and iTunes products.

The nano “is a dramatically different iPod,” Piper Jaffray Cos. analyst Gene Munster said of the nano player in an interview at the event. “It's not only going to bring new people into the market, but it will start a replacement cycle among iPod owners. Everyone is going to want one.”

The nano replaces the iPod mini and costs as little as $199 (U.S.), Mr. Jobs said. Mr. Munster said he may increase his estimate for 8.5 million iPods to be sold in the quarter ending in December.

Apple's nano, available in white or black starting today, weighs 1.5 ounces and has a 14-hour rechargeable battery, Mr. Jobs said. The player is 80-per-cent smaller than the original white iPods that came out in October, 2001, and about one-third of the size of the mini, he said. A two-gigabyte version sells for $199; a four-gigabyte version, which can store up to 1,000 songs or up to 25,000 colour photographs, is $249.

Madonna is making the content of her 15 albums available through iTunes, Mr. Jobs said.

Apple also struck a deal with author J.K. Rowling to offer audio versions of the six Harry Potter books exclusively through iTunes, Mr. Jobs said. AAPL (Nasdaq) fell 12 cents to $48.68. Bloomberg

All the reviews I have read so far by the journalists that have been using them for a week are referring to it as a good unit.

I think the song limit thing is actually referring to the limitation on the new iTunes phone which has a 100 song limit, reagardless of how much memory has been installed in the phone.

My shuffle is still good, although the Nano is a better package given that it has a screen. My 4G 60GB is still good - I have a LOT of music to cart around.

Don't need a Nano though - will just admire from afar.

Plenty of other good players about, but you've got to admit - nothing comes close to iTunes/iPod/iPod store. Winning combo all around.

iTunes 5 is also out today which includes an update to Quicktime. Major bonus - can now sync contacts and notes with Outlook!

Cannot get excited about the Sony NW's though. Don't you have to use the rubbish supplied software? Aren't they USB 1? Doesn't the finish rub off the units? I used to love Sony stuff, as a MD user but they really lost the MP3 battle by locking people into a crap business model for track sales, insistence on using ATRAC, etc. Love the screen on these units though! Left the shuffle looking a little silly.
