Hi,

I picked up our 2005 w203 on tuesday, it appears not to have rain sensor wipers, however, where the rear view mirror is there is a black plastic cover. Outside, you can clearly see the sensor in the black area.

My question is, is this just the sensor but not connected or am i being an idiot and just havnt figured out how to turn the sensor on. There is nothing on the stalk to say it has a rain sensor. Do I have to purchase a connector or cable and connect the sensor myself? If so, does anyone know the partnumber as I need to order a couple of things from mb parts. Thanks in advance.

Turn the wiper stalk to the first 'intermittent' position .. this should activate the rain sensor - leave in this position for auto sensing - or switch to '0' for off.

a rain sensentive wiper will only work in stalk position 1 (intermittant wipe). If you have a rain sensor try throwing small amounts of water over sensor area and it should start to wipe. if it doesnt have a rain sensor then it will just keep intermttantly wiping approx every 8 secs.
If you do not have a rain sensor it is very easy to retro fit all you need to buy is a light/rain sensor instead of the light sensor you already have fitted and recode the front sam unit.

Thanks, if i was to get the sensor, how do i recode the front sam unit and what exactly is the sam unit? Cheers

you will need to visit your dealer but you should not be charged no more that about 0.3hrs labour
SAM = signal accusittion Module (fuse boxes)

If you have/fit a rain sensor and leave the stalk in position one, bear in mind that the sensor gets confused by the light pattern through trees on a bright day and will screech the wipers over a dry screen. BMW's version is the same.

Great when its drizzling though!

Checked and its not a rain sensor. Anyone know the part number so I can order from the mb parts website?

Funnily enough, I have been chasing the same question today. Jay73 (who is parts manager at an MB dealer) says it's rain sensor MA2218708826 retail £32.40 + vat http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=259349&postcount=3

My thread is at http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=27850

I'll share any info with you - appreciate it if you could do the same?

Thanks

the sensor also acts as the light sensor for the auto headlamps (well it does on the beemer) so maybe its that.

I'm pretty sure that they are seperate on Mercs. Very confident of that on W203s

depends on what revision of w203. PRE facelift with d2B had seperate boxes with the light sensor having what looks like some form of optic in it and the rain sensor being the traditional violet colour . the new most bus when ordered with the rain sensor has a W211 style with the cluster of led's style things showing
