Is this normal with cruise control?

I've had quite a few cars with cruise control but never a Mercedes, so am new to this.
If I'm cruising with the cruise control set to say 70mph and push the lever forward to cancel it, the car slows down normaly.
But if I push the lever down a few times to reset the speed to 50mph it feels as if it is braking to this speed.
Is this normal?
If so, and it is braking, do the brake lights come on?

Yes, it's normal (the system will apply the brakes under the conditions you describe) and no, the brake lights don't operate.

Thanks Phil, never had this with cruise before.
It feels good to use but the lack of brake lights is a little disconcerting.

The Cruise control braking is only light and I suspect no more deceleration is experienced than lifting off the throttle in a lower gear on a manual gearbox, therefore no brake lights is no biggie.

If you hold the lever down, you'll find the car can brake quite hard and the brake lights DO come on.

If any braking force is applied, then the brake lights do come on, easliy confirmed at night where you can see them reflecting of cats eyes etc.

+1

By "braking force" we mean braking force from the brakes. Braking force from the engine would not ignite the brake lights. I guess this is obvious though.

Any idea why mine works up to 55mph but drops out if set to a higher speed. Its been a bit of a pain on the way down but not the end of the world.

Wrong size tyres fitted, worn and new tyres on the car or rusted reluctor ring.

Thanks DM I think it may be the latter as it has 4 new tyres on the right size wheels 17". By way thanks for the info on wheel bearing it has been as quite as a mouse on the way down ,:thumb:
