Hi all,
This winter is unprecedentedly cold here in Kuwait,my W124 takes too long time to warm up.
I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
I have cold started my star today and recorded the warming up (only 3 mins. to show you the behavior of the engine).
The temp. was 3 C (37.4 F).
Is this normal? It takes around 15 minutes to warm up.
I think the engine should be in higher revs to warm up faster,is that true?
what could be the problem (if any) ?
is it the throttle body?
here is the link:

thanks

Have you ever replaced your thermostat?

If not, it could be that its not closing which is causing your car to take long to warm up.

Thermostat and housing are a cheap part to replace.

Hopefully this is the cause

Looks pretty normal behaviour to me. On COLD START the revs are initially higher 1000rpm + and should then drop to around normal [ 750-900 ] after about 3 minutes. The engine should then rapidly warm up in about 5 minutes to operating temperature --80C [monitor on temp gauge] - this is best achieved by DRIVING away [ engine generates more heat quicker by " working" ] not idling! A short time after this driving on the road the temperature should drop again as the thermostat opens and the coolant gets circulated round the radiator. Using the cabin heater/blower during this initial time will confuse matters as it will function as a small radiator from the start so leave it switched off during testing. Long engine warm up times normally mean the thermostat is jammed open or missing which prevents the quick warm up. The other possibility is that your viscous fan or air con fans are permanently on delaying engine warm up.

First of all,I have changed my viscous last summer (4 months ago),the temp. reduced dramatically afterwards.
Since winter began and the temp. gauge never reached 80 (or 87) so as to let open the thermostat(I go to work and get back home and still around 60 or 70).
Last summer and after changing the viscous with after market one (feby I recall was the brand and it is German),the temp. gauge behaved just like what grober said, after 5 mins the temp. reaches 87,then the thermo opens and the temp. gauge goes down again.
In winter the behavior changed, that is why I made this thread.
I think the thermo is working better in summer,I'll put it in my list of things I want to change.
thanks all for you input.
