Alright, so I will be sorting out another car soon...question is, what should I go for? (No John sir...not an S65 AMG, though I'd love one! )

I've been deciding between:

190E (1.8, 2.0 or Diesel is possible)

C-Class (220CDI/250TD)

E-Class (220CDI/300TD W124/W210)

I'd like one of the newer ones, maybe a W203 C-Class...but haven't got enough yet, maybe later in the year; I just need something reliable and older MB's have that reputation.

What would I have to look out for if I saw one of these? I know I'm in London, but I'm considering looking for a car either near Ian's location or Ollie's location so I could perhaps take the car in for a quick check before I went ahead and bought it.

Many thanks, I appreciate any help, you guys know this means alot to me, my first proper MB! I love the 6 cylinder of the BMW but I just can't fork out any more for problems.

Given you like the BMW I6, maybe a 190 2.6 or W124 260E might be worthy of investigation?

Never driven either, but the 190 in particular seems to be lots of car for relatively little of the hard-earned stuff.

Ditto 190 or W124 260E :)

or S65AMG:devil:

I have had both the 190E 2.6 and a 260E. Magic motors and fun to drive, especially the 190E 2.6 :bannana::bannana:

My first Mercedes was a 190E 2 litre, and it was a brilliant car.

Given that your target is a modern Mercedes, I would get something like the 190E which will be cheap to run and will be pretty solid, and put the spare cash into the pot for the new car.

Only caveat is that some 190s and W124s won't have things like ABS and airbags, and forget ESP, so be wary on these wintery roads. :)

:) Classic Mercedes-Benz are head turners and demand to be cleaned so perhaps you should stick to getting a BMW 316  :)

It's raining :p :D :D What a pathetic excuse

Rain is really water and this valuable resource is invaluable when it comes to rinsing. Get down here to the English Riviera, get your Bermuda shorts on and wash that mobile mud heap. :D

The yuff of today!

Good luck in your quest,
Regards
John

Hosepipe ban here - spending a fortune on waterless wash.

Oh, and Silestanix, go for the E-Class.

I'm at work while typing this...haha

I'm going to see a car at lunchtime, 1993 190E 2.6; it's even got air con...! The guy's selling it for £1200, it's got a bit of a dent in the passenger rear door, but I could sort that out myself. It's down the Bath Road, so not far from work. E200K; My mum and I saw an E200K in Burgundy Red on Tuesday night locally to me, problem was the Supercharger was iffy, the car was hesitant, so I didn't go for it.

I read the replies but my internet is a bit iffy at home so I can't reply, so thank you very much for the replies, I have listened...! I will check it over thoroughly before buy, and then will take it to either Ollie or Ian for a proper service. We'll see how the car turns out first. :D If I see Ollie, then I will try and also see Malcolm and John, if that's ok with you both. :)

John...I will clean it, I have promised...! :p ...I saw an S65 AMG early yesterday morning outside Terminal 3 with a taxi permit in the window...it was black, and looked absolutely magnificent...!

I also got some good news, I passed my DfT standard Body search test yesterday with flying colours; just done my written test...nervous about the results!

Hello,

2.5 16v Evo II (below)

failing that a 190E 2.6 well built, solid, smooth drive.

Most have the 2.3 16V kits which if done right I like.

I think the you can get a 190E 2.5D also ?

I use to love this one the Evo II spotted a few in Germany as below

I've always loved the 190E Evo's...Insurance would be interesting for me though, to say the least...! I'm just off in a few mins for lunch, going to see that 190E 2.6 down the road from here; Any idea if the 190D's 2.5D unit is any good on the motorway, like overtaking or anything? I just need something reliable, solid, but good on fuel. My BM* has been a bit of a handful reliability wise, but everything else it's been ok, not too sure about the MPG yet though as I've used the tube to get here so far; when I do nights then I'll find out...!

Saying that, I'd be chuffed if that 190E is in good nick...I still have my exam results on my mind though...4 hours left...

Sorry I've reported back so late...!

I saw that 190E, it was running Very lean, and had a wierd noise coming from the 4th cylinder; it was also hesitant to engage reverse...so I left it at that and walked.

As for the exam; trounced it, 92%...

And for once...the B*W has had No problems in the last 2-3 weeks...

Well done on the exam congrats. I'd look at buying a late 190E, one with Airbags & ABS, 2.0E, 2.3 or 2.6 would work pretty well. In my view diesel isn't essential unless you're doing mega mileage.

Otherwise I'd be looking at buying a 260E or 300E W124.

I found some nice looking 190's on Autotrader a while back, I'd still like a 190 at some point.

Well done with the exams and good luck with the search for a decent car.

Regards
John

I'm selling my 190e 2.0 Auto if your intersted, I'm in Isleworth West London, it on eBay at the moment, I wont post a link here as it probably breaks the site rules but if you P.M I can send you the link.

Brian;)
