Keys Please!

Hi

I have just returned to mercedes after a short stint with daimler and an audi. Before i left keys were normal things with metal bits that turned other metal bits. Now I have been given this piece of plastic that magically opens the doors and starts the car!

What i am looking for is some advice on where to get another one. My "new" car is a W202 1998(R) C240 sport estate, and the key is the long plastic two button one (lock/unlock), with the metal key optional sliding within it. Unfortunately the previous owner had lost his spare key and so i only have the one.

I called my local MB dealership and they want £113 + VAT for a new key!

I remember merc being expensive, but this seems extortionate, is there anywhere else i can get one?

Thanks in advance for your help

Iain

Hi and welcome.

If you go to the Advanced Search screen and look for threads with 'key' in the title you'll find lots of information on this ... it comes up all the time.

From what I remember it's dealer or nothing - sorry.

PS I think there should have been THREE keys - there's a small 'emergency' one, too. Check your handbook.

It doesn't have to be a dealer - though they all come from MB in Germany. Price is non-negotiable I'm afraid!

Welcome!!

If I recall, that is a good price so bite their hand off.

You will hear lots of e-bayers saying they can do them cheaper. Not true. MB is the only place to get them. And you will need to prove ownership plus address

A pain in some ways, but in others? I am glad I have a car where getting another key is difficult!

Ive got same car (202) and yes, dealership I'm afraid, mine was £100 + vat.

Yours is the flip key wheras the one Iain wants is the electronic one so a bit more.

Ian,

any unused keys can be deleted from the car so won't work other than the blade which can then only open the doors.

Shouldnt all cars after 1998 starting on a R plate (facelift) have the new style key as you have stated your car is a W202 1998(R) C240 sport estate ??
Although being a estate it will still only be two button as the tailgate can not be opened by remote on W202 estates

He says he wants the electronic key with removable blade.

Correct :) I have a '98 Sport Estate, and it has a 2 button IR (new style) key

Thanks everybody, guess i will suck it up and take my v5 and passport off to the dealership.

The sad thing is that these keys were £35 in 2003. Prices have been increased to match BMW and VW etc.

Your new key will be a little smaller, have a shiney star on the back AND come with a selection of colour tabsto hold the metal blade in, so that £113+vat is really worth it!!

Your new key will be a little smaller

If only someone told these guys: :D
