I just wonder how many of us only have one key? The last owner can never find it. Hmmmmmmmmmmm:(

The stealers want £150.........thats a bit rich for what it is.
We should all get together in one go and ask for a masive discount. if we all buy together at the same time. :D

Volvo charge £200 and all of the rest are not that far behind.
Its quite labour intensive from start to finish when you order

Damn, fair point. Just begrudge paying £150 for something i may never need.
Whats the betting i will need it next time i go the car.
Should have kept my mouth shut.

I think that when someone is looking for a car we should tell them that they should come with 2 keys

If I remember correctly (had to get a new key when I purchaed my car) it is the metal 'key' which has to be specially (individually) ordered and laser cut in Stuttgart which cost the ££££ the electronic bit doesn't cost that much.
So I suspect that negotiating a discount may be a big tricky, cuz its the P&L of a spare parts guy in Germany you will be dealing with ...on the other hand, if you don't ask you don't get..

P.S. still got 2 keys

My key is the one with the thin blade that slides down the side of plasctic boy of the infared key. I just need a spare three button infared jobby.
Pitty you cant buy them on their own.

You should take £150 off the price of the car if you only get one key when you buy a car.;)

I would ask when looking do you have all keys? If they said no - sorry - I would ask them (as part of the agreement) to supply the spare...

I lost a Volvo key and if I remember it cost £200+...so I would look to cut £200 off the price before any further negotiations...

about 60-70% of the cars i supply go with two keys... its almost a selling point.

Thats one thing i will remember for the next mercedes i buy.
Didnt give it much thought when i bought this one, i was just so pleased to be getting my first mercedes.

Some M-Bs are meant to have three (two 'fob' keys plus a flat 'emergency' one). I haven't got the latter for my R129.

What's the collected wisdom on this situation? Having only one key it seems sensible to order another. When it arrives can the "missing" key be programmed out and my two keys (1 old 1 new) then be programmed anew to the car?

No that cant be done, so the last owner or the one with the key could just drive it away

Thanks, I was thinking/hoping that the car could be programmed with a new "combination" so to speak and that both keys old+new could be matched or paired with that.

Have I got this right;
In the case of a missing key, the new owner always has the danger that the former owner could turn up and use the missing key to drive away the car?

I always try to point out to a potential purchaser to ensure 2 keys come with the car, otherwise negotiate a £150 discount.

Also, it is a sensible precaution to take your spare with you when you go away on holiday and put it somewhere safe (NOT in the car!)

Yes. Unless you have extra security added after your purchase.

Dealers can programme out a key (irreversibly?) That is the situation I had when I got my car - it came with two keys, but I soon discovered only one would start the car. A visit to the dealers showed that the second was correct for the car but had been blocked in the EIS/DAS - so the dealers had to order a new key (paid for by the non-MB garage I got the car from). We sumised that a previous owner had lost the key, got it blocked and then found it again.

So I now have three keys (one of which will only open the doors - has it's uses).

P.S. Some useful info on keys here, see the second half for electronic keys (this implies that you can unblock a key if you have the green key for the EIS unit - see page 21).
