Hi,

Does anyone have general prices for upgrading AMG 55's to Kleemann 55's? 596BHP and 570lb of torque sounds.. interesting

I've spoken to the UK garage and they don't have the costs to hand. Site PDF's also don't work :(

Thanks!

The UK distributors don't have the costs to hand ?

Doesn't sound very professional , insist that they find out ..... how do they expect to sell any ?

I mean , the fact that you pulled up in a CLK55 should mark you out as a potentially serious customer and not a dreamer .....

who did you speak to exactly? Steen Greeve? (at least I think thats his name!)

These guys?

I must admit they didn't seem to know much when I enquired about new headers and sports cats. They turned their nose up on my car because it's ony a C180k but to be fair any car that has forced induction has the potential to run silly power. A C180k with a full exhaust system ie. headers, sports cat and cat back coupled with lightweight drive pulleys, a smaller supercharger pulley, air filter and remap should be running at an output somewhere between a 320 and 350 petrol, I'd say approx 240bhp with the right mapping. A 200k or 230k has even more potential with the lowered compression ratio a standard allowing for more boost. They must know all this surely being a tuning company but they couldn't really be bothered helping even though their site showed details for all the parts listed above for my car :(

Just lately my expectations of many tuning companies has fallen through the floor with being asked by customers to have their cars modded and the quality:cost ratio was abismal from some :(
Personally I'd try ringing them directly in germany, it should be a +49 phone number and 99% of the time they speak english so dont be afraid :)

Perhaps because it's a Saturday, but they took my details and I should get an email next week, I was just wondering if someone here has the information already :)

Tilly - Yes, that's the company, though I spoke to a lady.

When I spoke to them they just sent me the pricelist off the website, the PDF file rather than give me actual costings over the phone, great eh? lol

Kleemann are a Danish concern, and I've decided if I ever have the C32 Stage 3 Kleemanised I'll take it on a Ferry ride. I've recently been corresponding with a Danish guy who speaks very highly of his Kleemann outlet and has bought pretty much one of everything they do for the C32!!

Out in Denmark there are several distributors - in addition to their head office - so a little healthy competition probably means service is better and prices keener compared to the UK - where there's just Steen.

I can't recall anything specific, but I've never heard anything great about Kleemann UK - sorry Steen if you read this. The other thing is I believe it's a small unit behind a used sales pitch. It just doesn't feel conducive with high quality upgrades to a relatively new Merc. If I was just buying a K-box then I might do that in the UK - but nothing more serious.

PS I alway wander whether he's really Steve Green but had a typo on his business cards!! :D

Here's the official price list in Euros but remember fitting and stuff is extra.

Thanks Bobby, that's useful information.

I should have thought to look on the foreign site for the pdf

Yeah that's right mate, that's why the c180k and c200k have weaker pistons and different bearings than the 193bhp c230k with the same block. In the last few years, manufacturing cost is a real issue. Your comment would have been true a few years ago.

exactly :) That's why I didn't move onto cams, bigger valves and injectors etc. Things just aren't built like they used to be and its a shame because manufacturers haven't exactly lowered their list prices to compromise the quality differences have they? :( It's all about the money to those guys.

In relation to engine tuning, my experience lies mainly with tuning fords than anything and we did a DIY project on a 2.0 silver top zetec (last seen in the mk1 mondeos) and they can happily run a nice amount of power, it was running aroud the 240bhp mark which was optimal for a front wheel drive car and yes we had to change the pistons and con rods but it was only a few hundred pounds of a job. People seem to charge the earth for anything relating to Mercedes or BMW. No wonder the VAG group have such a vast following in the tuning world, they can be race prepped for aprox. ten pounds and a toffee apple (honest.... lol).

But the possibilities are endless if people only adventure towards them. I mean look at some of the old rally cars, 205 T16 for example 450 bhp from a 1.8, that was in 1984, 23 years on technology has advanced a long way and yes I know thy may not be reliable enough to chew miles and miles on the road but surely a similar setup... a 1.8 litre forced induced car 23 years down the line should be able to run a measly 250 in comparison, just a shame they cant really go beyond that because they are made out of nothing more than kit kat wrappers... shame really :( lol

But anyway.. back on topic! Let us know how you get on with this little venture, I'd be intrigued to see how much this costs and exactly what parts the kit is comprised of, good luck!

Actually, I had an email from Steen last night with the costs. I have attached the spreadsheet in a zip file.

I think to create a very rare car with that much power, it's probably a bargain, although, as with any modified car, you'll never get the return on investment.

£10k is an awful lot to say you can supercharge an M3 for less which also has the vanos system making it much more in depth to tune than a typical engine.

Although saying that, I'm not entirely sure what kind of timing system your engine uses although I'm sure someone else will be able to answer that....

Another point is the inlet manifold, is it a single or dual inlet system on the 55 because with it being a V rather than an inline engine it may run two separate inlet manifolds. If it does have two inlets and the kit comprises of twin chargers then I would happily revoke my previous statement because you would receive a lot more for the money and much more stable boost rate

Looking at that price list raises a couple of questions.

Would the difference in wieght between a CLK55 and CLK320 make the 320 handle better?

Has anyone seen a review of a Kleemann Supercharged CLK320?

There are all sorts of problems with adding aftermarket superchargers - a lot of discussion on BenzWorld. The Americans seem have a lot more experience so worth a look if you're serious. I toyed with the idea until I saw the prices - even HPS at half the price seems a lot of money.

You'll also need uprated brakes and a reprogrammed gearbox etc - what may be an idea is to find a CLK430 / CLK500 and buy a 55 Kompressor engine with all the ancillaries - there's one on eBay for £6k.
