Knock Sensor

I need to remove and check the knock sensor on my W202 1999 petrol I have the Haynes manual in front of me which is as much use as a chocolate fire-guard.

It says Quote first unbolt the windscreen washer bottle and position to one side (no problem) they then say unbolt and remove the inlet manifold support bracket but no picture,I cannot see what they mean by the bracket .

Can anybody explain where it is on the photo as I don't want to go stripping too much off unnecessarily as there are too many wires and sensors for my liking, the second picture is from the manual showing how you can get to the sensor from the top with loads of room,i have tried from underneath the car but can't get the torque wrench in which is quite crucial to have the correct torque.

The manifold support bracket is underneath the manifold AFAIK. functions as a triangular brace
top side= manifold, vertical side = block, sloping side = supportbracket, if this makes sense.

Not really Graeme
To have the room to work like the second photo From Haynes I would have to remove all that bracket with the loom in plus the large black piping that it is attached to and there is six bolts holding that and a couple are a right pig to get to.

what's AFAIK

Any helpers out there that has perhaps done the job before or removed the manifold support bracket

I've led a sheltered life, I didn't know what sex was until it happened

Sorry but have to wonder what DRAGON does on this forum he does not know anything about Mercedes but is up to over 1000 posts.

I was hoping somebody could help with this problem as it is supposed to be nice tomorrow for a change but DRAGON has not come up with an answer so it looks as though I am stuck with stripping things off tomorrow and hope I don't cause myself more problems.

I guess part 50 here is the bracket they are refering to.

However your picture looks more like the bottom manifold - with no bracket!

Edit: If you read section 9 in Haynes (Removing the inlet manifold) there is no mention of undoing such a bracket before removing the manifold. I think the knock sensor section was wriiten for the different manfold! Also the knock sensor pics (and the rest on that page) are clearly taken with the engine out (you can see the starter ring teeth). I suspect these are taken from a different car than the one used for the inlet manfold pics (where you can see the rest of the engine bay).

With the washer bottle out of the way - can't you thread a socket/extension onto the bolt (1/4in might help)

Stevesy has got it correct. The upper picture refers to the early cast alloy inlet manifold no 5 which is quite a heavy bit of kit hence the extra support bracket. The moulded plastic inlet manifold 11 shown in the second picture was used on later cars like yours normanr and is considerably lighter hence no bracket. Should have twigged what you were on about sorry.

Thanks Steve and Graeme

It is supposed to be a really good day tomorrow so I will follow your advise.

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply much appreciated.

Don't forget, ideally you need a new gasket for the manifold, otherwise it will leak air.

Thanks for the diagram Steve but why does the Russian site leave some of the numbers off the list, they number the item but that's it.[/QUOTE]

It means that those parts are not applicable to your car, so are not included on the listings.

The pictures are standard and cover all models, but some of the parts are not applicable to your car.

I trust you are inputting your VIN onto the site at the start point before the listing come up. If not, do it.

Cheers Matey

I will do that
