My son has a Compaq 2100 series laptop but the power socket seems to move a bit and it keeps switching off. A local shop said they couldn't repair it and another said they could for £150. Any ideas or help

Normally a bit of a pain in the proverbial on laptops that I've had in the past.

Basically the charging socket connectors snap off, requiring significant dismantling to get at.

What makes it worse is that often the socket is of non-standard type and isn't easy to replace.

No cheap option really unless you want to either look on eBay for a spare part, then repair it DIY style.

You might be able to fit a complete new socket on the PCB and a new plug for the AC adaptor as a pair, but it might need a little modification to fit it to the board.

Hi
I had the same issue with a fujitsu-siemens, just out of warranty. The DC jack was coming adrift from the motherboard, and needed to be replaced, resoldered etc

I used these guys to repair it www.odyssey.co.uk, who picked it up, and returned it, but it did cost approx £130 all in.

I suppose it depends how old it is before you take the plunge.

The laptop doesn't stay on without the mains lead?

No its not charging either.

Since posting I have found a firm who have said they will fix the loose socket for £30 ish. I'm going to let them try!

Keep us posted please. Iif successful would you mind sharing details of the repairer?

I dont know how adept with a soldering iron you are, but once you have the keyboard off and have split the cases, and lifted the motherboard away from the end casing, itis a relatively easy job to resolder the connector back onto the board and indeed make a better job of it than it came out the factory.Try not to lose any screws, take your time and dont force anything back in, the job is not as daunting as you might think. I have done the job on a Compaq, 2 HP's and also the tiny plug on a Dell, come to think of it, most used lappies I have bought seem to have this fault, perhaps thats why they were up for sale???

Mine is exactly the same.
The battery packed up ages ago,so it`s the mains lead-only now.
It regularly dies on me - it seems to do it when i move the lappy with a upward movement.....
I bend the central pin in the socket to one side a bit to make a more secure connection on the plug, and that seems to sort it out for a few weeks.......

I just changed my laptop because the screen on my Sony died...It flickers for a few minutes then dies..I can see something there but there is no light...any ideas??

Your backlight has failed. This image is still being output to the monitor but it isn't being illuminated from behind. This is often quite cheaply fixed (i.e around £50)

Laptop Repairs in Brimingham did my Sony Vaio for £80, Sony wanted £685 plus VAT, and the cheapest other independant I could find wanted £300  . When I found the Birmingham guys I dropped it off in the morning and collected it 2 hours later. That was over a year ago and it`s been sweet as a nut ever since. I`ve just tried ringing them, but the numbers dead, so not sure if they`ve changed numbers or not as they were still there a couple of weeks ago when I drove past. Might be worth a try if you don`t get any joy with the other place you`re trying. Good luck :)

The final bill was £40 and is working just fine!

Excellent news!
