any one know of good laptop deals about, something fairly basic would suffice.

cheers

If you do a quick search on laptop and notebook you should find some recent discussions about this very topic!

Try looking around the laptop section on http://www.ebuyer.com as they usually carry some excellent low cost IBM machines for around £450-550.

Yep. Good deal - I'd certainly vote for a Dell.

Please be aware that Dell have some of the most shockingly awful after-sales service EVER, unless you are a corporate customer and then it's only mildly bad.

If anything goes wrong after a year, it's new laptop time if you don't have the warranty and the helpdesk man in India is only too happy to give you the sales phone number :(

and unless you want to ship your laptop to france in the event of a failure I would give Sony a miss as well :(

For that matter dont touch sony products full stop :)

This looks a good deal - £419 for a basic Dell lappy.

(you need to change the warranty from 3 years to 1 year to get that price though)

thanks for that, just ordered one, interestingly the same machine buying through the business site is £474 inc vat , obviously the thing to do is buy from the retail side and then claim the VAT which brings it down to £356.

Assuming they don't make much on a machine and claw it back on carraige at £49  still the best deal around though so thanks for the tip.

havn't met a decent IT equipment after sales company yet so might as well buy the cheapest.

you might laugh - but one of our Vaio's went down after 3 months (guy actually dropped it) and we sent to service place in France - it was back within the week good as new - I was gobsmacked
