Hi All,

I have a 2003 SL 500, which is in fairly good condition, but i would like to give the leather seats a good deep clean and treat them with leather care products - What do you use? I have slight wear on the bolsters so would also like to re colour them back to black ( Hmmmm good name for an album! ) ... Any previous experiences more than welcome

Cheers

For cleaning and conditioning I use Gliptone products, however am about to try cleaning the leather seats with “Pears soap” as highly recommended by a good friend..

Hi there,

Pears soap! As in the brown translucent stuff you would use on ourselves? You will have to let me know how that goes as i only want to clean the seats and then get some leather rejuvenation stuff on them....

Oddly enough by dad told me that the best product for cleaning his collection of vintage motorbikes is good old fashioned Pledge! So pears might not be such an odd idea... Hmmm thinking about it more i do remember my mum used stuff on her horse stuff, Saddle soap, and that actually looked like Pears soap ( She probably washed us all with it when we were children! )

Cheers

I’ve had good results with colorlock. Their colour restorer for wear/scuffs etc is very good and easy to use.

I could not believe how a pro (who does all interior work for Porsche Tonbridge and Tonbridge Coachworks on high end vehicles) started the sort out of the leather seats of my 968 cab - Cobalt Blue leather. He'd asked me to treat them with Gliptone conditioner every couple of days for the week or so before he came to the house to sort them. I'd taken the seats out and set them up on a temporary workbench in my garage, he started by laying the seat backs back as far as he could then scrubbing them with warm soapy water! After that it was dye and conditioner, the difference was amazing, they came up "as new" and it lasted a good few years. I used Gliptone cleaner then conditioner a couple of times a year after his treatment, and they still looked pretty good about 6 years later when I sold the car.

It really depends on whether or not your leather is painted or dyed as to the best cleaning and treatment you should use.

another for Gliptone!

I've had good results with Autoglym Leather Cleaner followed by Autoglym Leather Care Balm. Both dry to a nice non-shiny finish.

I used to use Gliptone on my older Alfas but then im sure i read it's more suited to un-painted leathers rather than the more modern leathers like in my S212? (Excluding Nappa maybe?). Unless im wrong or unless they've changed the formula. I now use Colorlock for my painted leather and it works brilliantly and makes it go nice and soft with no residue - it's designed for these painted leathers. Personally though i'd prefer to use Gliptone as the smell is much better as Colorlock doesn't really smell at all. Any current Gliptone users know if it's really suited for painted leather?

He might not be a good friend next week. :)
A number of years ago nosing around an oil rig equipment store i managed to get a blob of grease on my trousers. This was super hardcore grease used for lubricating and protecting drill pipe connections. I tried all kind of detergents to get it off, even various solvents. Then out of desperation i tried some normal bar soap and it came off straight away! It was the closest ive been to witnessing a miracle. Im actually quite tempted to try it on my seats now.

Or good old “universal solvent” :) !
