Leather types

Well there's a surprise o_O It doesn't smell like leather, I thought nappa leather had soft feel to it. My Jags all had proper leather and always had that leather smell but My Merc just smells like a Merc............!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi , glad it's just not me but the leather seating in my car has never smelt or felt like leather to me.

For sure the leather does not come from Connolly !
 
Was the restraint leather or Artico?

Not specified, but fortunately it didn't include bicycle seats... ;)
 
When I had my car seats trimmed for nappa leather, I asked the company about the new leather smell, he said leather doesn't smell anymore, this was due to some process which takes place at the processing stage.
 
Interesting to learn that MB leather comes from Bulls that are kept in surroundings best suited to them.. :doh: I mean you wouldn't keep one in your house would you....:wallbash:

Bulls exclusively from southern Germany. In fields free of barbed wire. Bulls exclusively because the cows are too busy providing milk..
 
Them again, this is a car manufacturer talking, so it could be bullsh*t...
 
That will be Artico strictly a non cow product that will wear better the real leather and is 100% man made.

Mercedes had at that time 3 “levels” of leather on seats:
- Leather (entry, grain leather, quite hard)
- Nappa leather (softer, more pliable premium)
- Semi-aniline leather (softest, morst premium finish, yet hardy and durable)
 
Semi-aniline is the most premium leather in the range, and soft to the touch. (Most S500's have unimpressive stuff, whereas an S600 is a joy to behold)

All dirty leathers can usually be easily restored by a detailer or vehicle leather specialist to as new condition for "not that much money."

These guys specialise in premium and reconnolising. (They redid the interior on Harry's Countach)

 
It's no wonder some people become confused when various terms are used to describe material, ie we now have 'vegan-leather', 'carbon intensive leather' and no doubt others in addition to the usual Mercedes' Artico-leather. I suspect that 'carbon neutral leather' will arrive before long. Having said that, I suppose vegan-leather sounds like better value for money than plastic, vinyl, ambla (regd tm?) or whatever else you care to call it. Of course, Rolls-Royce used 'Everflex' on the roof, not vinyl.

It doesn't help when the companies selling this stuff hide the truth either.
A few years ago I bought a leather necklace from the Hard Rock Cafe in Prague, the small print revealed it wasn't real leather at all and after a few weeks it disintegrated and just fell apart.
I left a review on their internet site warning anyone it was not real leather and would not last, every time I put the review up, Hard Rock deleted it, gave up in the end.

How come Aritco cracks/disintegrates at around 50/60K miles as it has on my CLK and many others have the same problem
My 64 year 190B Ponton has indestructible MBTex no cracks, some stitching has come undone and is a bit grubby.

When cleaners use the wrong products, and when interiors get overheated, even vinyl gets damaged.

There are thousands of Artico interior taxis around that are still running around after hundreds of thousands of miles. At a couple of grand cheaper than leather, Artico's been the standard MB material for years now

MBTex would survive nuclear armageddon, Artico is but a pale imitation ..
