Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Be careful what you wish for . Winter tyres have a different compund which offer better grip in cold weather. They might offer a marginal advantage, but a blanket of snow in a RWD saloon and you're wheels are spinnin' like the rest of us! Unless you've opted for studded snow tyres?

My third year using them, and on my E55 it was the difference between using the car or not, but thanks for the heads up. Anything sub 7 means I'm on the right rubber ......

If we get snow my E55 would not make it up the slope of the drive! A couple of years ago I put winter rubber on my Transit and when the snow came it made no difference, it just slid all over the place! With a shiny new motor I guess it is worth the peace of mind.

"Marginal advantage"? not for me, it transformed my E350 into what felt like a four wheel drive car on snow and ice.

smillion I hope you are in Scotland....a tad early to fit isnt it?
I am waiting for as long as I can this year because when my winter wheels were fitted last year and the weather turned mild it was like driving on jelly!
Obviously warmer than 6 degrees isnt good for winter tyres and they wear a hell of a lot quicker than normal tyres.

Oxfordshire 8 degrees high, 3 degrees low. It's all the incentive I need

I don't want snow.

Who does, unless you're 7 with a new sledge.

With £55k of car I just want a better chance ....

What tyres did you put on?

I have driven to Switzerland in a 1 series on winter Dunlops and it didn't break a sweat.

My first experience of winter tyres was driving down a mountain pass that had not been cleared at 5am in my cousins E Class estate, just on regular winter tyres, and it was like it was a dry road. I admit doing 70kmph down a mountain in the dark in a foot of snow I was bricking myself, but he does it every day and assured me it was not an issue.

He then took me to a car park up the mountain on the Sunday and let me drive his car so I could see just how much grip there was. I was a convert.

They were Sunny Snow Master budget option. Maybe not the best, but I was disappointed with them. With a load on the back there was a degree of grip, but empty the Transit just spun its wheels at every start on loose snow and ice. I guess cars have a better weight distribution, and better quality winter tyres would help. I just priced a set of Vredstein Wintrac for the E55, but at nearly £800 I cannot justify spending that amount as I do not do many miles, and what's the point of driving an AMG in the snow!

I've had my winter tyres on all year round since October(ish) 2010. They've been brilliant.

Been using winter tyres for the past four winters and the do make a big difference.Like you can get home ! First had them on BMW Mini and kept them on all year and no problems encountered .Vrederstein I seem to remember (forgive spelling if wrong) and would recommend them to anyone

People used to laugh at me getting stuck in a light dusting. Now i take people for a ride when it's thick on the ground. An incredible transformation.

There is absolutely no point in buying a budget winter, they use the block pattern of a winter and that is about it, many of the premium summer tyres beat some of the budget winter tyres, the don't use the right compound let alone put sipes into the tread.

Probably put you off forever, but of you get a chance to pick up a decent winter do, even if they are off ebay cheap, when they are good they are amazing.

Absolute rubbish!
My CLK beat a BMW 4X4 from a standing start in 6" of snow. I've also owned a Nissan X-Trail with 4WD & all season tyres and the CLK on winters is far safer to drive.

Russ

I should add, we had to use the BMW on winters while the A6 Quattro Avant sat in the garage as it was wearing summer tires.

Tyres are everything.

There was a video on youtube of a Subaru Forester getting down a long track in deep snow where a Pajero and some other 4x4 was stuck, but then showed just how bad the Forester was on summer tyres.....in a car park.

Tyres are everything.

made a huge difference to my W124 estate in the snow too.

well worth it.

Probably depends on the brand of the winter tyre too....

Which brand are you running Derek please. Might treat myself to a set this year, I'm looking at Vredestein at the moment.
