hi

today something worrying happend:

went to overtake a car so put my foot down on the accelerater to drop a gear (i as in DRIVE). the engine just reved and felt like it was in neutral. Then the only way to acclerate was to move into Fourth gear and then it was fine when puit back in Drive again. However i couldnt move it into neutral when i stopped the car... had to put it into 3rd then move back to neutral to make it shift into neutral.

any ideas why this would happen? problem with the gearbox? clutch?

thanks

derek

It sounds like a gearbox problem as the selection for P,R,N,D are mechanical and 4,3,2,1, are electrical only.

Change the gearbox fluid and see how it goes.

hmm, this happened for a 2nd time yesterday.... Seems it didnt engage the gear when it tried to shift down when i accelerated....

car has done 82k - do you think that the gearbox oil needs changing at this milage? not indicated on service history whether changed in the past or not.

any advice would be great.... before i book into MB for the work to be done...

also any idea of cost from a dealer for a gearbox oil change?

It sounds like the valve body is sticking. Classic signs of old AT fluid.

Change the fluid as it isn't a service item it won't have been done.

S'S,

I had my oil changed at 98K and it was like driving with a new gearbox. Changes were so much smoother it was unreal. If it gives you an idea Andy Gayle charged me about £120 plus VAT for the work.

HTH,
Greg

hmmm, looks like i'll be booking the car into MB for the gearbox oil change soon then

Having had my car serviced by that kind Mr Walker this past weekend I cant emphasise enough the need to regularly change the ATF fluid and filter. The stuff that came out of mine resembled engine oil and the filter was well chocked up. I thought mine had been done regularly but looking at the service records it was done at 36000 and not since. The car now has 91000 on it.

The gearchange has now gone from smooth to almost imperceptible. Oh and kickdown operates at an indicated 100 MPH.

Having seen what came out of mine, where ATF fluid and filter is a service item, it makes me wonder what is happening inside the so called "sealed for life" gearboxes.

Mannn... MB don't specify ATF changes?
My previous Audi was every 40,000.

Cost me £25 (1 hour labour) + ATF fluid £12 inc VAT from a mobile mechanic
- personally I prefer mobile peeps (when car is taken away from main dealer) as you can actually see them perform the work!..and learn something in the process.

However for my E240 I plan to keep it main dealer for the main servicing for the stamps and Mobilolife.
