Any ideas how to get into a W210 that has a flat battery and the metal key won't unlock door. Is there a positive terminal accessable to give a little power to the battery, or is the only option to smash a window?

Are you referring to the flat battery in your key fob or the car?

Use a small wire to open up the metal plate which keeps the rain out of the keyhole. Keeping the hole open spray in large amounts of wd40. Jiggle! (the key that is), in and out (the key! concentrate!). Leave it well alone for a bit. Try opening the door with the key, applying increasing amounts of pressure whilst being careful. Repeat the oil and jiggling if needed. Wait. Try to open the door with the key.
NB this method worked for me getting into my C230K boot when the battery was flat.

Tried the oiling and the jiggleing but still no sucess, and where there was a slight resistance when turning the key and it sprang back to centre, now there in none and the key seems to move from side to side doing absolutly nothing. Garage said if I can get an additional battery connected somewhere that should power up the central locking, but where?

I don't suppose you have a towbar and light socket do you ?

One wire (to power the 'fridge whilst in motion) is direct to the battery.

No unfortunately, is it possible to get to the starter motor or alternator from underneath, and if I jack the car up where can I put axle stands.

Yup, tried the boot but the key wouldn't go in more than half way

Did you manage to get it sorted?
If so would be good to decribe what you did.

Cheers

Mark.

I spoke to Autotechnic and they suggested taking off the plastic panel under the engine to enable access to the alternator. Once I was able to give the battery a boost it was enough to power up the central locking and open the car. I have now installed a new battery (£70.29 from dealer) and all works well. I need a new barrel, apparently, but not sure if I could get one from a scrap yard or if it's coded to the car. Thanks to everyone that offerd advice.

I had the same problem with the boot lock as you and I have just (today) dismantled the lock, removed the lock pins, ground/blew/wiped all the crud out of the lock barrel, replaced all the pins, greased everything then rebuilt it all. works perfectly now. found that it was the first 3 or 4 pins and the last one that had siezed badly and needed the most work. I did this because it would have cost me £140ish for a new one. let me know if you get into a pickle, I'll see what I can do :D
