Locking wheel nut

Tried to put a spare on the ML last night as rear left had a big screw sticking straight through the tread. Annoyingly the locking wheel nut appears to be damaged as it can't get any purchase on the nut and is just threading. Took it to main dealer as they took the wheel off and changed the speed sensor about 8 weeks ago. They say it has to be drilled out. I would have thought spot welding another bolt to the locking nut would be best solution but they say has to be drilled out and then a new set of locking wheel nuts. Any ideas if that is best solution chaps ?

Take it to any decent Indy, they should be able to remove it easy enough

I spent hours trying to spot weld a nut to one of my 4 (a few cars ago) locking nuts, went through two sets of those reverse threaded remover tools and it wouldn't budge.

I went to a local backstreet tyre place and the wise old chap got a socket and a massive hammer and whipped each of them off in about 30 seconds per wheel...

I had problems with locking nuts on my last Mercedes, had a "specialist" come to my house and managed to remove two nuts from the back wheels but could not remove the rear ones, so I had a chap weld some bolts to the locking nuts and they came undone a treat. The so called "specialist" charged £60 to remove two of the nuts and the guy who welded the other ones charged me £20.

Main dealer really came into his own today and sorted this with no hassles. Result.

Yes and yes. Removed the offending nut. Acknowledged probably over tightened by then when replaced a sensor and provided a new set of locking wheel nuts. It's one of those rare it's gone my way situations. To be fair this main dealer has always been pretty good.

Yes, that is fair play to them (although it is a sad state of affairs that one should be surprised and grateful they did the honourable thing...).

I had a similar situation not so long ago albeit not a main dealer but same outcome.

There are tools on the market for removing locking wheel bolts, particularly if they are the genuine Mercedes-Benz genuine ones. Tey consist of a "reverse screw" where they dig into the bolt head as you unscrew them. quite inexpensive, wont damage your alloy wheels and easy to use. I have a set and they work fine.

Hope this helps.

Phillip.
