Looking for a CLS 55 AMG, any tips?

@Cyclone1 omg she is a beauty!!! Love the murdered out look, you definitely have a sick ride there!!!

I think you're using a somewhat different dictionary to the rest of us...

I can't speak for the CLS specifically, but from my experience with the 55K-engined E class, on anything with over 100k miles it's quite likely that you will need to spend about a grand straight away. That will be the engine and gearbox mountings, the corroded rear brake pipes and a couple of front suspension joints sorted. The air suspension is just a lottery, really, but on a high-mileage car, unless you're very lucky or it has had extensive work done, it will go wrong, and can be very expensive to fix; any sign that it's not 100%, either the current owner fixes it, or walk away - if it was a cheap fix, he'd have had it done...

As the others have said, buy on condition and service history. If you're lucky, you may find a car with everything I've mentioned already done, but if at all possible, have a prospective buy inspected by a Mercedes specialist; it could save you making an expensive mistake.

Good luck.

“us”?

I totally understood what the OP wrote. It’s 2020, you have to open your eyes and embrace change and diversity. Our common ground here is the “car”, not how the person expresses them self.

Very well said!

This is all fantastic information! Wont lie as my first post I have been delaying this as I wasnt sure what the response would be 😂😅😅 I cant agree more with the condition part, one of my friends had a mint CLS 55 that he unfortunately sold 2 years ago, it run and performed like a dream and this was in no small way because always kept on top of the maintenance

I think a realistic budget would be between 8-12k, potentially a bit higher if I do find a “true gem” which would include a milage under 100k!!! Not really concerned per say about high miles but have always been the one to hit the 100k in my cars, personal thing 😅

The air suspension worries me the most, not sure if it is fear mongering (especially coming from more traditional coil over cars)! The test of having the owner put the suspension up and down will give me that much more comfort!!!

@moodi that sounds like a really good option! I am serious about the purchase so please do keep me in mind if you decide to let it go! I dont think I am able to dm yet, but if you can with the details when you decide id love to take a look 😊

Hi,

So did I...

Cool it, kids; if you can't take a joke...

Oh, and Moodi, your car looks far better than the "murdered out" black one; the wheels make all the difference.

Don’t back track and be patronising! You used a rolling eyes smilie , so clearly wasn’t joking. Let’s just keep threads on topic and not judge.

Point one: Moodi's car does look much better than the other, and it is the wheels that make all the difference. You may not agree, but it's a matter of taste.

Point Two: You obviously can't take a joke. OK, I get that. Feel free to take offence, and issue with my posts, in future if that is the way you see them.

And Point Three: For the avoidance of doubt, the expression "the rest of us" has a different meaning to "us". I had not thought to specify the (probably small) group of forum members whom I did not include.

It's ironic, really, that those who use slang terms rather than plain English to prevent those not in the know from understanding, then take offence when one of the latter group pretends not to understand. You may take offence at this too, but it's mostly a yoof thing...

This one has been for sale for a while now looks a really nice well looked after and priced car! especially like the unusual quite rare colour Tansanite blue with the cream interior Lovely combination i think also been a later model as a few upgrades like the supercharger compared to the earlier cars,

Point, point, point? Point well and truly made........

I only referenced your original opening comment on this thread, aimed at the OP for his use of words and then reference to “rest of us”. Nothing more.

The rest of the points you’ve since added I hope have made you feel better. But with point 1, it’s not something I’ve referred to on this thread :dk: but yes I do agree that silver alloys lift an all black car CLS55, I spent months pondering the change whilst owning a black CLS55, as the previous owner had had the OEM alloys powder coated black. But never did the change.

And it looks all the better for the silver wheels.

Just for interest, how much is the annual road tax on a big-engined car like that?

If only.... I'm a big fan of the CLS, and that's almost my absolute favourite colour combination for a car - light honey-coloured leather would be better, but there's not much in it - but try as I might, I just can't make even my man maths add up to making it a sensible buy. If I didn't have dogs... but I have, so it has to be an estate.

Road tax is €1809 a year, that’s for anything above 3 litres but after July 2008, cars here are taxed on emissions so anything that produces over 225 co2 is €2350 a year. Probably one of the biggest reasons AMG’s etc. Are so rare here.

Now never let it be said that you’re not dedicated to the AMG cause! 🙂

The lowering along with most of the work and servicing was all done at MSL Performance in Birmingham.

Did I ever do any performance mods?:p

Hahaha yes! The smaller SC pulley will be a must for me once I get the CLS 55, would be good to drive it stok for a bit too but the upgrade path would have to include more power!!!

Seems like they stay reliable even with these upgrades too!
