I recently spent a lovely week in Madiera and used their taxis quite a lot. There are some 800 or so on the island and I would guess about 95% of these are Mercs varying from W123, 124, 210 and 211's, and of these I would also guess that approx 99% were manual. I got into one of the older taxis and it had 895k killometers on the clock and everything was still working.
I did ask why most of the cars are manuals, and was told that most of the cars are small engined 2litre or 2.2 litre diesel and with their hills, they were afraid the gearbox and engine would not cope. However, I did notice a number of W124 3 Litre diesels and W211's 270's diesel still with manual gear boxes. Oh, and they are all yellow
